What kind of consumer is AT&T aiming this ever speedier network to? Is it mainly corporate use of Aircards?

Is there an assumption retail customers will take more interest in 3G data applications over time?
The demand is low across all carriers, excluding aircards.

Kind of simple there my friend. The primary consumer would be business and regular customers who want higher data needs and usage. If you aren’t a heavy data user this isn’t for you, especially if you don’t need the speed. This type of network will target the cable/DSL and satellite offerings that are fixed at someone’s home or business.

Yes there is an assumption that 3G+ will do well overtime. Didn’t you observe what Motorola, Nokia, Sierra Wireless, and Novatel Wireless said with regarding data? Novatel Wireless increased their guidance because of the demand for data cards and since Sierra Wireless is in their industry their demand will be higher too.

The demand is actually high, especially as more and more high speed types of tec...

Interesting, I would like to see cable/DSL sweat a little more, thanks for the insight. The increasing demand for data cards certainly makes sense.

I've quoted this WSJ article before, but it still makes me wonder if Average Joe and his phone will embrace 3G.

'Although 88% of today's cell phones come with Web-browsing capabilities and more than 117 million people owned such phones in October, only 16.6% of these customers used their browsers to surf the Internet that month.'

3G may help tip the scales.
Thanks nextel18.

What i Demand (the average Joe here) is Better cell coverage. I think AT&T should let sprint and Verizon spend all there money on this high speed data, and AT&T should continue to improve there network. In the very end, they will come out on top. Think about it how many average Cell users are going to pay an extra 50 a month just to have wireless Internet. expecally since most city s are getting ready or offering free WIFI now. Here in buffalo they are installing free city wide WIFI.

No problem. Yea, the cable companies will start to sweat soon, cept for Verizon with FIOS. It should be interesting with FIOS, Wimax, and HSDPA/HSUPA competing against each other.

Now, wireless companies are starting to team up with this technology that improves in-building coverage so that again targets the landline companies, probably again the cable companies.

the data side of things will continue to progress the same way your basic landline did as your primary telephone....as networks become more and more capable, they will start to bacome the primary sources of internet in the home and offce as well. bye, bye cable and dsl....

Heck yes, bring on the higher speeds already!!!
I can't wait to be anywhere/anytime with the SAME speeds that I enjoy @ home!!!

I don't think there's any point at all for Sprint/Verizon/Cingular to offer wireless internet if tbey can't compete with the speeds that the cable industry offers, offer 3-7mbps, or nothing at all.
