what do you expect... CDMA = Qualcomm = VZW + Sprint

I would expect that Sprint and Verizon Wireless come to the defense of Qualcomm, afterall, its their chipsets that are in most CDMA (1x/EVDO) handsets. They have to look after their bottom line.
Its not like they're using TI or Nokia chips 🤤

Absolutely. Sprint and Verizon has to since they are the largest customers. Although if Broadcom's stay is granted, then they will have look at other Technologies if they want to stay in business.

Give Broadcom the finger and switch to GSM? I'll admit it would be very nice and would be a win for their customers, but I highly doubt it would happen, as it wouldn't provide the same levels of "control" that they have now and like to exert.

All in all, I think this is just drama. Broadcom and Qualcomm will settle, and it will be business as usual.

Broadcom is actually highly desperate and trying all measures to get even in the same level playing field as Qualcomm, although it won’t happen. Check out the many suits against Qualcomm because their competitors are too afraid of Qualcomm. Frankly, I would be too. Look at its patent holdings, cash flows, and lawyers. They spend a fortune on R&D and their lawyer fees trying to obtain as many patents as possible as well as defending them.

It is possible to go from CDMA to GSM, however, very costly.

who wouldnt be afraid of qualcomm, its basically a monopoly when it comes to cdma chipsets, the fact that qualcomm is very powerful, scares me. and they are patent pushers, they want their hands in every aspect of the wireless industry, i wouldnt be surprised if they manufactured GSM chipsets or "claim" they have patents for making GSM(i already know this is not true, i can get a lil hypothetical at times)

Yea, Qualcomm is quite powerful in this industry when it comes to all standards, and that is why I invest in the company. They have a massive patent portfolio where they buy up companies and acquire patents even if they won’t use it, their lawyers do a great job at protecting their thousands of granted patents as well as applying for their thousands of pending patents in front of the PTO. They have their hands on; Wimax (OFDMA) with the purchase of Flarion, obviously CDMA, WCDMA/UMTS, and HSDPA/HSUPA.

Desperate to protect their patents.

Why is it you say Broadcom is desperate when it protects its patents? Doesn't Qualcomm protect more patents? Does that mean they are more desperate than Broadcom?

I won’t answer muchdrama’s posts because I feel they aren’t worthy to, but I will touch on yours.
Qualcomm has more patents then Broadcom as well as others will even dream of, but more importantly, they keep on protecting those patents (which are essential for growth) vigorously. If you look their last quarter, Qualcomm that is, it was hurt because of their court costs associate with the various lawsuits in the ITC, as well as in this country with regarding patents and others.
Reason why I think Broadcom is more desperate than Qualcomm is that Broadcom is having many problems since they have more than 30% or so of their revenue mix associated with Motorola and you can see how it hurt them when Motorola mentioned their $1B miss. I also th...

I don't think you answered my question. Just because Qualcomm is bigger, doesn't mean that it doesn't get desperate with its patents. Does it have some sort of different playing field in the free market?

You asked if Qualcomm protects their more patents and whether or not they are desperate. I did touch on your questions because I said that QUALCOMM does protect more patents, and I guess you can say that they are desperate at protecting their assets when it comes to patents, but I was showing that those other competitors/companies are more desperate because they are going after QUALCOMM for reasons because of competition and unfair royalty charges (they claim). In fact, they don’t charge nearly as much as others do and competition well it isn’t their fault that they were giving permission by the PTO for approval on those patents. if you compare their revenue and the wireless’ revenues you will see that it isn’t the case at all (check the num...

What are you talking about. They were talking about CDMA no EVDO. WIMAX will be running on CDMA for Sprint and Verizon.

It will not be running on, but it will be an overlay. They will have dual mode Wimax/CDMA devices, but that will not be for a year or so afterwards. Wimax is just primarily for heavy data users.

That is not true at all, but some of the patents that Qualcomm has for OFDMA pertains to Wimax also.

Well of course, Sprint and Verizon would go to Qualcomm’s aid and a number of other companies are doing the same thing at the ITC hearings, because it is 100% true that if Qualcomm’s chipsets were ban then it would ruin many businesses. Not just on the CDMA side, but on the OFDM side and on the Wimax side.

Yeah, screw the fact that Broadcomm's patents might be violated.

We don't need no stinking laws!

Don’t forget that the government is backing Qualcomm also. Moreover, other companies like Motorola, Samsung, and others are doing so too. Some companies like Anadigics, and Skyworks are backing them up as one of them has exclusivity with Qualcomm. Novatel Wireless and Sierra Wireless one of them also has exclusivity with Qualcomm and they are backing them up. You see how many companies are involved and industries and you will see that it will destroy everything that Qualcomm’s chips touches. Don’t forget the banking sector and others who use Qualcomm chips for their cellular devices and other services. There are others too who are involved.

(Disclosure; I own shares in the companies mentioned (cept Motorola and Samsung.)

So, it's okay to steal patents as long as you can make a lot of money off them and try to exert monopolistic power?

It’s never ok to steal anything including patents, China and India don’t seem to see that as the contrary which is causing billions upon billions of dollars that are being lost from our economy, and if the company does violate those patents and is proven in court they should pay for it, however, to ban is a bit too over the top. When they want the ban that is a tactic, a good one that will force the parties to settle at a higher premium. Think back to the NTP situation with Rimm and The Blackberry. They blamed Rimm for using NTP’s patents without permission or royalties and because of the threat to RIMM with regarding a ban, and the government backed RIMM all the way, this forced RIMM to ante up the settlement with the firm.

Yes, Qualcomm, is a huge company when it comes to this wireless industry but more importantly globally. They provide work and tax revenue in the countries they are in, which fuels growth. You know what technologies they are in and they are; CDMA, WCDMA/UMTS, HSDPA/HSUPA, and OFDMA. You know obviously they are a global company that supplies their chips to basically many companies out there and now they are starting to put their TV solution, MEdiaFlo, to work on different platforms such as Verizon and Cingular, if I am correct. Some products they offer (which is on their website), engineering services, BREW, email solutions with Eudora, application development, GPS, they support logistics and transportation (GPS), construction equipment, conn...
