Western Divestitures

I would think that Verizon may actually have more of a problem than AT&T would to buy it. In the west, there are many areas where Verizon and Alltel are the only choices, some of which include most of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and if I'm not mistaken Nebraska.

Also, Alltel inherited GSM infrastructure and roaming agreements from Western Wireless. Should Verizon purchase Alltel, they would also inherit these (which would probably please Vodafone). I wouldn't think that Verizon would be able to simply shut off this system, as it would look to better themselves by hurting their competitors from predecessor agreements. I guess, perhaps, they could divest that infrastructure? I'm sure AT&T would be up for that, that could reall...

Actually in North Dakota and South Dakota Sprint is available along with Verizon and Alltel. In Nebraska there is Sprint, Alltel, Verizon and AT&T. I'm not sure about Montana, but I think they only have Alltel and Verizon.

There are other carriers in Montana although they are small ones, Airtel which is an Iden carrier and also Chinook Wireless. Eastern ND and Northwest SD also have Unicel which is part of RCC.

I forgot about the p.o.s. Unicel (They are actually in southeast SD). They are one of the great wireless companies that lose signal less then a mile out of town, not a good thing in So Dak.

I hear you on that one, and besides Verizon shows no mercy! If you call in bc your bill is huge they pretty much tell you that you're screwed, any other company would be will to credit at least some of it back, especially if you threaten to cancel. I don't think Verizon has a retention department, which they should really think about getting.

I hear great things about Verizon in markets where there is a lot of competition. When they are the only provider, they have no reason to cherish you. What are you going to do, switch providers?

Unless it's different than it was a year ago, Sprint is not *widely* available, as they only have have coverage on the main corridors.

Compairing any company to Unicel is an insult to what ever company you are talking about. I'm stunned that Unicel is still in business. Unicel (AKA RCC) is one of the poorest run companies in the wireless industry. All companies are in the business to make money- that's a basic rule of business. But Unicel is different in one way- their goal is to look as good as possible so that they get purchased by another company. It's like the fat guy/chick that poses as a hotty on internet. Surprise surprise. Guess what you really get. If you want a good and reliable GSM carrier, NEVER go with Unicel.

Sprint is only available in limited areas in South Dakota (Sioux Falls and Watertown, on the eastern end, I believe). So Sprint would not be considered a major rural carrier, and according to the FCC, every state is required to have at least two.

In SD, the two major rural carriers are Alltel and Verizon. In NE, they are Alltel and US Cellular. Not sure about ND or MT.

When Alltel bought out Cellular One, Cell One and Alltel were the two major rural carriers in Nebraska. So shortly after the acquisition, Alltel had to sell its Cell One towers located in Nebraska off to US Cellular so they wouldn't have a monopoly. I imagine the same thing would happen to Verizon, where they would have to sell off a majority of the Alltel towers.

Unless a LOT has changed in terms of cellular service in ND and MT, the major carrier, and only statewide carriers, are Verizon and Alltel. I don't imagine Sprint or T-Mobile suddenly blanketing rural states in a year or two.

Also, in the recent past, Extend America, headquartered in Bismarck, ND sold its iDEN network to either Nextel or Sprint (not sure which one it was at the close of the deal). Now that Extend America became Nextel, I would imagine Sprint will start migrations so it can shut down that network. Most of EA's network overlapped Sprint's anywa...

I live in South Dakota, used to live in North Dakota so you are wrong...sprint/ nextel is also offered in the dakotas, leap wireless (cricket is avaliable in nebraska) There is also a local GSM service in SD! So no it would be ok...and the original CDMA Cell one is still avaliable in Nebraska!

I to live in SD and Sprint sucks for the most part in my area, I mean yeah it works good for the bigger cities here, which is very few. But for the most part if you are driving through SD and taking the back roads going out in the country which there is a lot of, and the secondary highways, you are not going to have service from Sprint in those areas.

And as such, Sprint will not be considered to have a considerable presence in the state.
