i have a feeling sprint would come on this too since thier friendly agreeements and would make alot more sense to me. the money from nextel is still be poured in but remember the cable companies can still pour money in too.

all sprint needs to do it a migration and ask cable companies and it will be set

I don't think WiMax would really be deployed much in rural areas. Rural areas simply aren't profitable, which could be part of the reason Alltel would sell out, as its coverage is mainly rural.

Actually, if Sprint did improve its services in rural areas, they would have several more customers and be even more successful...Cingular is about the only carrier that covers rural areas, especially in the SouthEast.

I can only speak for the upper midwest where Cingular do not have much service because they have not made there way into the market up here. Verizon and Alltel are pretty much the only thing works in the rural areas. I do think that they are profitable areas though. Obviously there is not EVDO or Mobile TV in the but about half of my customers live in rural areas and get good service. People in rural areas want wireless sercive too. I think it a more profitable market then many would believe.

I live in the upper midwest as well, and there is no Cingular coverage in the rural areas here either, actually in the entire state. And yes Verizon and Alltel are the main carriers out here, especially in the rural areas, so I think that person needs to get the facts right before posting a comment up about which carrier works. It might be the case for their area but not all over.

I'm not saying that it's not profitable at all, I'm just saying it's not as lucrative as more densely populated areas, and there is only a limited amount of money to invest.

It makes perfect sense for Sprint to try and buy Alltel, since Alltel is buying. They have reciprocal roaming agreements and complementary coverage ares without much overlap, since Sprint covers the major metro areas and highways, while Alltel has built itself upon being a rural carrier.

This is the deal that should have happened, NOT the Nextel deal. Oh well. I guess we'll see what happens; I really would love for my coverage area to get a nice boost.

You're right. It does make sense. Sprint's coverage would greatly increase.

I don't think Sprint is banking on CDMA for it's future. Remember they merged with Nextel for the 2.5GHz spectrum they will use for wi-Max. I wouldn't be surprised if Sprint eventually sells off or shuts down its CDMA operations and goes 100% wi-max.

They need to do something if they are to survive, thats for sure. Their results continue to show them lagging behind both Cingular and Verizon in postpay adds.

Yeah, but adds are not the determinant of company to survive. Profits are. If Sprint is earning a decent profit, it really doesn't matter how many customers it has.

Sprint made the most out of the wirless companies by almost 10 billion last year, not sure what the amount of profit was, but sprint spent 7 billion in 2006 to improve the network, whereas most other companies only spent 2-3 bil.

All this means is that sprint had at least an extra 7 billion to spend on improvements.

(they did however layoff 5000 people, but cingular is going to cut 7000 people. sprint had more employees, so the percentage of cuts is lower, but are we hearing much about this? no, why?)

All the carriers are in it to make bank on you using air. especially if you use more than you say you will.

Sprint will keep the cdma network at least for a while. WiMax will not replace voice usage for a long time. (it'll still be...

Where is this 10 billion revenue coming from? From all internal and external sources they keep saying VZW leads the wireless industry in revenue since Q3 2006, and before that it was Cingular.

sprint made 43 billion last year, verizon was somewhere around 38 or so. this is gross, so take out all the cost of payroll, etc.

thanks, captian obvious, i think there is a customer needing their wireless bill explained somewhere.

the 10 was an estimate on revenue compared to other companies, partly because of high-margin data prices (sprint music store, power vision tv channels) and even MVNO's may or may not be affecting this number too.

There was at least 7 billion in profit to spend on system upgrades. so this makes me think that sprint made at least a little more than that in profits. At least unless they blow their whole paycheck on rims for their monster truck.

Now...a question about accounting. Are infrastructure expenditures considered capital investments or expenses?

Uh, spelling...

If you ask an enron exec, they'd say yes, even the pencils are counted as capital investments.

I think it's considered a capital investment, but the maintenance on them is considered an expense.

I hope you realize that none of what you just said is true.

1. Verizon Wireless had the highest revenue in the industry in 2006.
2. Cingular invested the most money back into their network last year (at approximately $6.3 billion).

Where did you get these numbers you speak of? I believe I read elsewhere that they were estimates? If so, stick to facts because the guessing isn't working for you.

i hope you realize that i researched my numbers before posting.

My sources include press releases by all three companies, specifically one from sprint on November 16th, 2006, as well as wikipedia.org

The revenue numbers are as follows for 2006:

Cingular - $37.5 billion
Verizon - $38 billion
Sprint - $43.6 billion

Thats a difference of $5.6 billion that sprint made over verizon, $6.1 billion over at&t.

speaking about layoffs, here are the employment numbers before the layoffs for both companies:

cingular - 70,300
sprint - 79,900

sprint laid off 6.26%, while cingular is/will be laying off 9.96%

The estimates that I speak of were profits, not revenues, all the other numbers are verified.

So the links to these numbers are...where?

I wasn't speaking on the layoff numbers. Those I know are correct. However the capital investment and revenue numbers are still way off.

wikipedia.org

but i'm sure they can be verified with other sites. just click the notation next to the numbers.

I searched these terms exactly when I looked:

"Sprint Nextel"
"Cingular"
"Verizon Wireless"
"T-mobile"
"Alltel"

I can't get internet on this restricted computer, so i don't have the direct links now.
