IMPOSSIBLE!!!

Even if Skype tried to have this passed, it wouldnt work. As we all know GSM uses sim cards and CDMA does not. You cant take a T-Mobile phone and put it on the Verizon network. (EVEN IF YOU UNLOCK IT) Unless they want to put up a ton of money for Sprint and Verizon to change their networks, its impossible! How stupid! 🤣

No, its not stupid. Clearly, a device would have to be compatible with the network in order to use it. That goes without saying. If your GSM device is unlocked, you have a much easier time of it currently because you can just swap SIMs. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but if you wanted to use a Sprint branded CDMA phone on Verizon or vice versa, would they let you? I'm not sure on that one. Users may very well have a desire to use Verizon phones on Sprint or T-Mobile phones on Cingular, etc. Currently, the carriers attempt to subvert this activity by locking phones.

Also, the bigger picture would be a case where you would fire up your Skype application on your Windows Mobile device such as a Treo and then make and/or receive inte...

It IS stupid. Verizon DOES NOT alow any other phone other than a phone that is manufactured verizon on the verizon network. PERIOD. Im not talking about gsm to gsm. im talking about gsm to cdma. its impossible. a verizon phone will NOT work on any other network REGARDLESS of unlocking it. AND im a chick. so dont talk about things you dont know. and a better life than watching vondage commercials at 3 am. get a life. 🙄

I think Skype is fully aware that CDMA and GSM are diffrent and cant be used on each others network, i think they are tryin to make it so CDMA and CDMA, GSM and GSM, can work no matter what network they are on respectivly.

Meanin that all GSM carriers phones will work on ALL GSM networks and CDMA phones will do that same on CDMA networks.

I think you missed the point.
But i have to agree this will probably never happen.

After reading your last post, it is now clear you are a female. My apoligies.

Why would anyone want to try and use a GSM phone on a CDMA network?

Are you saying that a phone designed for Verizon's network, ie. CDMA, cannot work on say Sprint's CDMA network or Alltel's CDMA network or US Cellular's CDMA network or Cellular One's CDMA network (should I go on)???? How do you think roaming works?

I'm really confused now. But, clearly you have more experience in this area than I do so I will be quiet now before you make a bigger fool of yourself.

Of course you can ROAM on different CDMA networks (as long as your CDMA carrier has roaming agreements with the other CDMA carrier), but you cannot activate any CDMA phone on any network unless it is branded that. You can't actiavte a Verizon KRZR K1m on Sprint, you can't activate a Sprint Sanyo M1 on Alltel, and so on and so forth. There is a whitelist of ESNs that each carrier has, and if your ESN isn't on the whitelist it wont actiavte. And obviously, a Sprint phone's ESN won't be in the Verizon ESN list.

The key to the arguement is this list when it comes to using your phone on a network it wasn't branded for. The handset is technically capable of working on other networks. An excellent example fo this is a Sprint phone with total roaming access on Alltel's network including EVDO. Its the same signal and whatnot, just a different company owns the alternate system.
The ESN bank is something completely different. Its just a record of every phone registered to work on a particular system.
This is all well and good but...

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SKYPE!!! See my future post on this one...

Actually you can use a sprint phone w/ VZW... it is not easy but it is possible. I have a friend who can flash almost any sprint PDA and load VZW software to it and activate the esn. BTW t-mobile leases a lot of towers in California from cingular and Alltel leases towers from Verizon all over the place. And if i heard correctly AMP'd runs off of the verizon network as well...

You stated "Verizon DOES NOT alow any other phone other than a phone that is manufactured verizon on the verizon network. PERIOD"... Well then how could a I sell many unlocked Sprint Treo 650s for Verizon customers before Verizon released it? It was unlocked and you can search the net and find the software to fix all of the settings (data/mms). My customers had no problems at all getting Verizon to activate the handset with the Sprint ESN. =)

However I do agree with you that you can't use a gsm phone on a cdma network and vice versa....

Actually, the phone *will* work on other networks. That's how Verizon allows its customers to roam where it doesn't have coverage. The data system, for example, may be different, but it still runs on CDMA, regardless of being BREW or JAVA.

I could understand carriers not wanting to support devices from other networks. But if a customer wants to use a compatible device, it should always be allowed, albeit some restrictions may be necessary, such as carriers not being responsible for technical support on "foreign" devices.

Another example of a company wanting someone else to provide the pipe and the switch for calls. This way the Skypes and the Vonages have a free ride on the back of others footing the expense of the infrastructure.

Eventually all companies are going to be GSM or WCDMA, both run on SIM cards just like the rest of the world, for now unlocking will only really benefit us on GSM. 😎
