Qualcomm Speeds up 3G, Cingular Is Interested
EV-DO playing catch up ?
My current Cingular phone (V3xx) is capable of 3.6Mpbs downloads using HSDPA once the network is updated to comply. (Theoretical speeds I know.)
EVDO Revision A has a much lower theoretical download speed AND you cannot use Voice and Data at the SAME TIME like you can with UMTS/HSDPA.
Will EVDO ever catch up ???
cingular will probably get this but it wont be deployed till like 2011 because hsdpa isnt even up much.
so before hspa+ is up, they need to do hsdpa all out first.
do i think its a direct competitor to wimax? possible but think about this. wimax handles calls on voip and data. wimax has a range of possibly 10 miles and wimax is a worldwide standard. with the data output and capabilities i believe sprint will achieve in this. the question is where is verizon in this?
cingular has a great network but thier data subscriptions is probably not a much as sprint or verizon.
verizon is playing catch up to sprints rev a
sprint has almost 100 markets in rev a and will deploy wimax...
(continues)
GSM/HSDPA has over 2 billion subscribers globally, while CDMA has ~500 million, and WiMAX is still to be deployed in anything substantial. WiMAX will have a decent product to compete against POTS/DSL, but until it has handsets, and any sort of roaming arrangements, it will be local/regional services. I suspect Qualcomm will 'rob' everyone - Verizon Wireless and Sprint included to go with whatever makes them the most profit and most powerful. That is currently UMTS/HSDPA.
Well hopefully WiMax will force Cingular to offer they're lesser speeds at a lesser $price$
I live in Las Vegas, if there isn't WiMax here by November of this year, then I'm just going to get the best air card that Cingular is offering around November.
Another words, I'm not waiting past November for ANYBODY.
give wimax a chance... its probably going to be ahead of scedule like sprint always does
Secondly, "launch speeds" for example Verizons launch speeds for Rev.A are NOT 3.1mbps, it's between 1.1-1.6mbps @ launch.
Enough with the waiting game, I want to know "launch speeds"
in addition, the cdma development group continues to announce further improvement to evdo and recently announced revision C, or UMB.
However, it does have one VERY big advantage--the ability to use both Data and Voice at the same time with these technologies.
The stagnation of EV-DV is a shame.. I think the ability to use both voice and data at the same time would put it on a more "even" playing field.
Also, I think the most practical reason is if you are using a data oriented application and a phone call comes through, your session doesn't end. It just "suspends" and runs in the background until the call is over. Then it's right back to where you left off. Not the case with current EVDO.

evdo rev A's speed is actually the same for download (3.6 mbps) and faster for upload (1.8 mbps) as hsdpa. so i'm not sure why you think hsdpa is superior. (at least from a speed standpoint).

Everything I have read says the EVDO Rev. A standard supports 3.1 mbps, not 3.6 like HSDPA. Do you have any sources?
What good is it to have EV-DO and not be able to use Voice and Data at the same time?
As of right now, EVDO Rev. O and A cannot do voice and data simultaneously. But Rev. B and C can do both simultaneously as all voice will be channeled as VoIP which is essentially data of its own.
By the time EVDV would have been fine tuned and ready as a standard, Rev. B and C would have been able to be rolled out. They were/are much more viable solutions.
That is the point I am trying to make.
EV-DO is not true 3G in the sense that EV-DV would have been.
WiMax is NOT a 3 or 4G technology to whomever posted that earlier, it is Data.
