Cingular = fake PTT

From my understanding of what Cingular's PTT really is, it's almost same process as regular phone call - long delay as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong - I've never used Cingular's PTT service (never will use Cingular either) and am going off what I've heard and read.

The initial connect time averages about 5 seconds but after that there is little or no delay/latency. I believe the in call delay is actually slightly better than that of Nextel.

I wouldn't use a PTT product though...no matter how good it was.

Maybe you should use it before posting comments. I used to have Nextel which was junk in comparision. My employees love the Cingular push to talk as do I. It is so convenient for everyone, especially the feature that allows me to see who is busy and who isn't, and for them to see my status. Check it up before complaining.

but in different construction site you tend to lose signal... with cingular ptt even verizon and sprint ptt.. where are you without a network coverage... NOWHERE... if you dont have a signal you dont have PTT... with nextel signal or not you have PTT... so you most be doing construction is really rural area, not climbing to high, and have great coverage if you are using cingy PTT... because their phones arent durable and wont withstand a 2 foot drop on carpet let alone a 20 phone drop on hard ground... trust me... i dropped my cingy phone last night on carpet and it took and hour worth the removign the battery and sim card to get it to recognize the sim,...

Very good point nextel does have the direct-talk which is a great product i have used it before in woods with great success. Another point i always make is that with nextel you always have had a walkie talkie no matter what it came with the phone. With cingular you don't have a guentree your friends have a walkie talkie which makes the walkie talkie useless to buy unless for business needs. Everyone please understand i am not bashing cingular ptt. I just stating...

1. cingular(at&t: WORLD DOMINATION YEAH!!!), does not manufacture phones, so it is not their fault if their phones aren't durable, its not cingular's market

2. nextel's network is going the way of the DODO in 2010-2012

3. Qchat will blow away IDEN once they get it fine tuned which will be in 08, and it will work on EVDO which is more advanced than IDEN

Actually, under ideal conditions, the voice over voice PTT solution is actually faster (due to the faster origination and termination of voice calls at least on CDMA).

And yes, the kodiak solution is a regular phone call while Moto iDen is a VOIP call via a data call.

moto IDEN's PTT is not VOIP over data, IDEN natively supports PTT, IDEN is basically a glorified ptt system based on tdma, with intergrated calling(regular phone call) functionalbity added. the IDEN network was originally built for ptt,

and ptt over cellular using cdma isnt faster yet due to latency, cdma has a longer latency as far as ptt than iden. but that will be solved once qualcomm releases qchat that will work with evdo rev.a and b networks

i had ptt(samsung d407) the initial connection was around a couple of seconds but after that its about the same as nextel, but much clearer. and it has more options(change your status: available, do not disturb, unavailable[out of service area or phone is off]) and i really liked the ptt to voicemail feature.

the montly price didnt justify it's use plus i cancelled it after 2 months, this by-the-minute plan is kinda good tho, but i have no use for it
