I don't think its any worse than people byuing an 802.11g or even worse 802.11pre-n WiFi router for their internet connection which only runs at 1.5Mb. The highest speed home service I have ever seen is only 12Mb which, yeah, you might want an 802.11g router for, but the average is 3Mb which 802.11b could more than handle.
SO why get an 802.11pre-n router? Because it's new and cool ;-)
