They've had a decade to get their act together, and all they have to show for it is, uh, nothing.
It's not like the world's crying out for open source operating systems anyway.
1. The world doesn't KNOW that there is anything to cry out for, because of the aforementioned lack of $$$ and advertising.
2. Linux already has a significant market share in the server market and other corporate environments, and is becoming increasingly popular in mobile devices and other small electronics.
3. Linux has put together some truly innovative and high-quality operating systems. I agree that they are not quite at the "point-and-click" functionality of M$ or Apple, but they are getting darn close.
4. All this has been accomplished with little to no support from manufacturers. Almost all Linux drivers are custom developed by volunteers, and new hardware is coming out ALL THE TIME, so obviously that is a large sink of resources that would otherwise go elsewhere. M$, on the other hand, has drivers developed, packaged with their product, and tested by the manufacturer.
Moral of the story: getting big manufacturers and companies like these to back linux is key to overcoming some of the obstacles it does have at the time. yes, linux does have limitations, but honestly, have you realized that linux almost 100% the work of volunteers?! Considering that, I believe it is quite an achievement, and it is one part of the whole open source ideal, which is currently changing the world in some pretty significant ways.
