but the frequency that these phones use for CDMA service is only 1900 Mhz. Yes you will be able to have more reliable voice calls, stronger data and a much more intuitive and easier text protocol, but you won't be able to roam! There isn't any 850Mhz capability with these hybrids, so essentially you still have a Nextel phone and coverage, its just that it happens to be using CDMA technology for calls. So if you happen to travel alot and are in an area that Sprint has a roaming agreement you still wont be able to use this phone.

i dont get why they would make this phone and not have roaming put into this phone. what is the eye catcher with this phone? it wont have EVDO so what would make someone from the IDEN network switch over to the CDMA network? they didnt really think about all of this when they made the phone......

roaming is a pretty basic "feature" though. it's not like we're talking about a music player or bluetooth...

Acually, the i402 & i502 WILL NOT roam digitally, hence the "PCS only" tag - at least not in my region. I have this from several tech/net people inside of "Sprextel". The idea was to offload voice traffic from the Nextel channel to the CDMA side especially in certain markets, not to offer a unique 2 network "we-have-it-all" solution that might actually gain marketshare .....

Good post. I'm betting a lot of people were expecting just the opposite.

Actually I think undrgrnd is right, a little wordy, but right. All this negative talk is a bunch of people looking to complain about a cell phone company they hate (that's probly never happened before).
Fact is, the phone does exactly what it was meant for...CDMA for voice and iDEN for PTT. Is this a ground breaking device that's gonna send the customers flowing into the company, no. But it is gonna give current customers what they were asking for (particularly iDEN): Direct Connect with some voice coverage too.

Anyone looking to use these phone in the northeast is out of luck. All of Sprint's roaming agreements in the NE area are with companies that support only 850 and not 1900. At first these phones where not even going to be launched in the NE area.
