Mind you..Apple choose the carrier with the largest customer base...not to mention a carrier that does have the largest digital voice AND data network. As it stands...Cingular is #2 in voice coverage, yet #1 in DATA coverage. According to an article on Yahoo! tech that I only posted here a few thousand times. (sarcasm)

http://tech.yahoo.com/blog/null/3554 »

Lets go through this again:
(I only count the home network.)

Sprint:
Voice Coverage: 295 Million + (CDMA) -- 264 Million (iDen)
Data: 158 Million

Cingular:
Voice Coverage: 270 Million
Data Coverage: 250 Million(EDGE) -- 70 Million (HSDPA)
(Note HSDPA phones can access data on the EDGE Network. Many EVDO phones cannot use 1xRTT Data--or its unavailable.)

Verizon:
Voice Coverage: 255 Million
Data Coverage: 150 Million
Even with roaming agreements...including the one with Sprint--VZW still only can cover 291 potential people--services cannot be guarenteed in roaming coverage.

T-Mobile:
Total Coverage--including roaming partners: 275 Million
(Sorry...they don't provide any other details...so I had to.)

So..it is a given fact that Cingular..(erm..the new at&t) truly does have the largest all-digital voice and data network.

Not to mention that they prolly were the only carrier willing to abide to Apple's stringent guidelines in regards to buisness partners. (It takes an act of GOD to become an authorised retailer of anything Apple. I've seen these guidelines....they are massave..and strict.)
