With Apple and Cingular not wanting the iPhone unlocked, how will that work with the U.S. Copyright Office ruling that all cellphones can legally be unlocked?

The legal ruling was that cellphones can be unlocked, not that the companies are legally obligated to unlock the phones for any reason. If Cing and Apple do not want to provide unlock codes (or make it possible to even have an unlock code feature available), they are legally within their rights to do it.

*nods* Fully true, just like currently with CDMA...sure you can unlock the phone...but its completely useless to do so.

CDMA carriers have their ESN's pooled...like their phone numbers. So If you tried to activate a Verizon Phone on Sprint...it would not work...because Verizon's ESN numbers are not available in Sprint's pool. The same is true the other way around.

Since both companies agreed to perma-lock the iPhone, they can legally do so. Not like its gonna hurt either company since they singed a "multi-year" exclusive contract.

Most average "multi-year" contracts between companies run between 5-10 years.
