I sure can.

As I'm sure many others will when their touchscreen ceases to operate.

WOW...can we say apple obsessive?? I agree that apple is an excellent company when it comes to style and technology, but lets be honest here. Look at how sensitive cell phones already are when it comes to water and things like that. How good is this touch screen-only phone gonna be when you accidentally spill a dab of water on it? Or set it down on a counter that may be wet and not notice? And how many $500-600 phones do you think apple will replace before they start setting certain stipulations?

Okay, but thats your laptop. I've spilled water on my cell phone before, and Cingular was quick to tell me they didn't cover water damage. Laptops is one thing, cell phones are another, and everyone knows about the water damage and cell phones thing.

kinda curious how it is that you feel that the carrier or the manufacturer should replace your phone after you damage it water or dropping it or whatever you do that is your fault ?
like ( uh i drove my car into a wall can you give me a new one )

uh its electronics drop your tv or your dvd player or get it wet and see if they replace it for you

if they built a phone that was shock proof and water proof it would be too big and you would cry about that

*giggles* something about a "Lifetime replacement warranty" that Apple places on ALL their products.

Every carrier in the US refuses to cover water damage under warranty. It's not something that only Cingular does to piss people off. Here's a simple yet effective idea: don't get your phone wet. It's not that hard.

apple is taking care of all the support, nytimes editor has already taken the iphone for a spin for about an hour and asked extreme Q&A's to the VP's....they said apple will handle everything but the network, water damage and fire as well as freak accidents are covered no problem, and they said they should have the applecare as well that covers everything and more for an additional 3 years for a relative price of $100, so water damage shouldnt be an issue, and even if it was through cingular, cingular's insurance covers it with a $50 deductible, so either way i wouldnt mind

Uh, hello... anyone own a Nintendo DS Lite? Those have screen protectors and warrantys if anything happens to the screen because of the stylus. However this phone doesn't use a stylus so I don't see a problem here...

Either way... it's a piece of equipment... It's not perfect... there is more than likely something going to go wrong, but Apple has enough substantial backing to work out the problems with the product.

Not that I'm a fan of Apple... I don't even own an Apple product, but it's rather obvious that are popular and have a lot of fans... They wouldn't be so popular if they didn't have a good product.

While I agree that the cost of this phone is pretty crazy, I've gotta say that this phone is indeed cutting edge.

Why? Well, two things that immediately come to my mind are (1) the multi-touch capability of the touchscreen, and (2) visual voicemail. Those are things I have NOT seen on any other phone.

Another thing to think about is that because this phone is completely touchscreen (aside from some hard buttons), the possibilities for future software releases is just incredible. Programmers are not tied down to a specific form factor when designing new ...

And I agree with you, but I still think that the majority of the price of this phone is being sold from the looks alone. And just as the ipod did it elegantly, how many had to be replaced before they got it right? I'm not saying that this won't be a fabulous phone, it just suprises me how quick people are willing to run out and spend a close to a thousand dollars for a phone with kicks, not even business capability, and then argue that it will be flawless before its even had its first release.

The reason why they haven't introduced a 3G version is because it's still pretty much non-existent for nearly all of Cingular's customers. I read somewhere that less than 1% of Cingy's customer base actually uses HSDPA.

Apparently there IS a 3G Apple phone already. I'm guessing they are figuring they can take their time with it since Cingular has yet to bring HSDPA to everyone.

sorry but smartphones in the market right now range from 300-500 as is, like the treo's and the dash's etc....plus you have an ipod that is 250 alone...plus the visual voicemail never introduced to any carrier or cell manufacturer, plus it has mac os x which is probably the most user friendly OS out there...along with many need features such as google maps and gps triangulation, if you owned a mac you would know the superiority of the iphone...and if you do own a mac and still think this product isnt going anywhere..then your just a moron..

There will be a market on Ebay for this phone I guarantee it.. I can walk right into a cingy store purchase the phone and kill the contract.. so I get the phone for 599+175+36 = 810 (plus tax).. I am sure there will be some haxors out there looking to get thier hands on the device to unlock it and see what its capable of.. so there will be people out there paying 800-1000 or more for the phone..sans contract..

ya good luck with that...the world seems so easy for you....once again you should read a little bit before inputting your moronic ideas....the phone wont be available for retail until 2009, so dont even think about buying the phone out or being able to find it on ebay for less than asking price for a long time....look at video game consoles its the same thing triple the prices...especially because there is already a waiting list for the phone at all cingular stores...this list will get huge by june..as well as not buying it out till 2009, that was ATT's agreement for the iphone, mandatory $500-600 purchase WITH 2 year agreement or no phone for you even if your willing to pay a grand...they want you at cingular for 2 years

Why would you think it won't work? Think about it. Why the hell would they make a phone that uses a touch screen for every function and then just have it not work? That doesn't even make sense to assume. Look at the many PDAs, smart phones with touch screens (or the DS, which takes far more abuse than any phone I'm sure), which all have been released and all actually work.

Seriously, why would you just assume that they would release a product that simply won't work? Do you have any actual reason for it or are you one of those irritating people that always has some completely unfounded thing to say about random products?

And you can't say I just love Apple because I'm really not a big fan of their stuff. My wife has an Apple lapto...

Who the hell said they would release a product that simply woudn't work??? YOU need to get a grip. We are aking legitamit question regarding how well and how long this phone is gonna last. You people are swinging from this phones nuts and haven't even read a real review. And we're not talking about the other PDA's with touchscreens. We're talking about a 700-800.00 touch sensitive pocket mirror.
Don't try to justify it to me unless you're trying to sell it to me.

The only thing I predicted was people having accidents and if those were going to be covered. But what new technology doesn't have issues upon first release? Its unrealistic to think that this phone with all that it can do will not have any problems or complaints on the first run. I just hope that Apple provides the same support for these phones as it does for its computers. And if so, how much more will people have to pay for that support?

You simply don't know how hardy this phone is going to be, and neither do the rest of us.

There are plenty of phones out there that have touchscreens, and I haven't heard any horror stories about any of these phones suddenly being afflicted with non-functioning touchscreens. Granted, there are probably several you can find if you play archaeologist in blog archives, but I haven't heard anything about any particular touchscreen phone failing in alarming quantities.

On a side note, I would think that anyone who drops $600 on a phone would baby that thing and not let it come to harm.
