No other US carriers until 2009

SB2002

From CNN.com:

"Cingular, a unit of AT&T (up $0.13 to $33.94, Charts), will be Apple's sole U.S. partner. It's an exclusive multiyear agreement, which means no other carrier will be able to sell the iPhone through 2009."

I'm sick of short-sighted companies, including Apple. Why in the hell would you lock up a phone to a single carrier for two years? By that point, the phone will be 100% obsolete.

I'm sick and tired of being forced from one carrier to another in order to buy the nicest phones. Apple won't get a single dollar of my money on this one... they can take the iPhone and shove it for all I care. I hope the big guys (Moto, Nok, Sam, etc...) learn that the best products don't need exclusive agreements... they'll sell themselves...

this phone is already obsolete as far as data is concerned. That alone is a MAJOR drawback...but its apple first attempt at a phone. Apple's problem is they try to make everything look fancy and sometimes they just dont work out. This phone will be the same.

ya ur right there are..but im going to venture and say that after vista comes out the tables will turn...if apple wasnt so exclusive to creating everything themselves they would be on top believe me, masnufacturers like dell and hp etc would be at apples feet, but apple does it themselves and thats a great thing, look at all the screwing up windows does, never had my laptop crash with mac, my pc crashes every other day POS and its brand new..

I have a mac and it's crashed before. Would you stop going into every forum thread and defending mac like they pay your bills. This is getting out of control. You seem to have some type of rebut on everything that in some way makes mac look weak. Macs can crash just like any other operating system. Most People don't use or want osx. They use microsoft. Bottom line. Not changing anytime soon. Sorry for you buddy. 😈

Mac's hands down do not have the same problem with crashing and freezing. True it has and can happen but nearly to the extent pc's do. This is precisely the reason why i changed and since then i would never go back to a pc. as for the exclusivity issue I really think Apple Inc is doing a smart thing. I will admit that Mac pc's do not have the same market share as anything operating with a windows OS but I think we can all agree that over the past few years Mac has definetly made ground to stay competitive. The ipod has put them back on the map and a combination of the Mac pc gaining significant popularity, combined with the ipod which holds a 75% market share and THEN to combine with Cingular and then subsiquently at&t, this phone is looking...

And how did this get in to a win/ apple war?

I like the design of this apple phone.. though im with verizon.. The biggest thing that is impressive with this phone is the "dual point" touch screen.. (touch the screen with your fingers together.. then spread them apart and this is a zoom feature for web pages) Seriously this is state of the art.

Then explain to me this...How is Apple still in business if they are selling an inferior product? I see a lot more Ford Focus's on the road then BMW's, does that mean they are a better car? And when you're talking software, it's the same price. Sure hardware may be more, but you'll purchase less often.

I agree with you about the data issue, lack of HSDPA is a HUGE, HUGE drawback, plus lack of Stereo Bluetooth, EDR and A2DP are two entirely different Bluetooth protocols!!!

I mean duh!!! Cingular, by the time this device is launched, will have had it's 3G network up and running for 18 months, damn it, this iPhone oughta be an HSDPA device, very, very, very dissapointing!!!!!

Just because T-mobile can;t sell the phone doesn't mean that you couldn't use it on their network. They chose GSM.. if you want the largest GSM base in the US then you choose Cingular.. If you want to use your phone most places outside the US you choose GSM. its that simple. they want 1% of global handset sales.. if they went with CDMA they cut off 90% of the worlwide market.

I am sure within a year you will see a UMTS version(hopefully triband UMTS) and a CDMA version in 2008- but I am sure you can blame VZW/sprint for not allowing it to operate on their networks.

It's going to be fully locked... and assuming someone can hack the software and unlock it (this is new territory... we're not looking to unlock just another Nokia) you'll still have to worry about every tailor made program which is going to attempt to access Cingular servers and such. Buying grey market unlocked devices for over $400 is a waste... and Apple not selling an unlocked GSM model is a waste.
...
rytr23

Jan 10, 2007, 11:44 AM
Do you have a source for that? Have you played with the device? Also, if you buy it Cingular is compelled to give you the unlock code should you be going over seas or if you pay full retail for the device like perhaps from an apple store. So I wouldn't worry so much about "tailor made apps" As far as I can tell, the google programs work on more phones than just cingular..as well as the Yahoogo app.

Well actually this is going to be a very worthy and yet exciting challenge to try and hack this phone. I have already hacked the N90 to swap it to any carrier the customer so chooses, but granted any Nokia is a cake walk. This phone however will be a little trickier, but there is always a way. I would almost guarantee within 1-2 weeks off the launch of this phone myself or someone withtin my company will have the answer you are all looking for. Isnt modern technology great?!?! 😎

I absolutely agree 100 percent....that is why the blackberry sales alone will completely dominate the sales of the iPhone. And if you were going to limit this phone to one network being a Quad band phone, why Cingular!! i make a living alone converting unsatisfied customers of Cingular and bringing them to any other network. My congrats go out to the one-sided minds over at Apple...heres to you for ultimatly deciding and leaving the fate of this phone to a company thats overall market is weak and on the downfall. No matter what phone they carry....

You people that are griping over this phone being exclusive to Cingular need to get a real grip. Considering switching your carrier based on who has the "phone of the month" is probably one of the most assinine things I've ever heard of. Your choice in carrier should be based on service coverage first and foremost. I've been a Cingular customer since the BellSouth era and I have to tell you, compared to the coverage of most other carriers (excluding VZW), Cingular is head and shoulders above the rest. You T-Mobile homers need to realize that while your company is great overall and offers some great service options, your coverage and customer base is still a notch or two (at LEAST) below Cingular and Apple realizes this. Besides, this wh...

I simply created a business that gives consumers, like yourself, the opportunity to make a decison with a handset and a carrier that best suits your lifestyle. Now the reason I get a lot of people off cingular to alltel is because they chose cingular in the first place because they wanted the best and cingular didnt deliver....so i get them the "next best" thing, which is alltel. And by the way where the hell do you live neways...Sticksville USA? Alltel, Verizon, etc prolly dont even want a store there because you got like what, 100 people in your town? I've got a grip 🙂 As I said, I won't be switching in order to buy this phone, much to the detriment of Apple. I'd love to buy it, but I'm going going to be railroaded into Cingular. My point is as follows: If you've got a good product, you shouldn't be forced into selling the exclusive rights. Imagine if Sony decided to sell the PS3 only at Best Buy stores. Why should they do that? And I'm not just talking about two weeks of advance selling. Imagine if Sony signed an agreement saying no PS3 will be sold in the US outside the doors of Best Buy until 2009!!! What a dumb idea! You can't compare buying a phone to any other type of electronic device. Wireless is a different animal. The fact of the matter is that the VAST majority of the American buying public learns everything about wireless at carrier stores. It's that simple. Apple didn't have to go exclusive with Cingular/AT&T but that's what it takes to move the most units.

Nokia is the most anti-carrier exclusive OEM out there, but even they have had to go down that route. It's just the way wireless has evolved in the US.

As a person in this business for many years, I can tell you that Apple knows what is best for them. If they honestly thought that they would not benefit from choosing Cingular as exclusive, they wouldn't do it. They are pretty smart folks. I am sure they know what they are doing. It is simple. Cingular is the largest provider of cell service in the world- especially GSM. All Cingular has to say is- if you don't let it be exclusive, we will not offer it to our customers. (54 million + customers) Trust me, they had much rather it be a sure thing with Cingular than taking a risk that it might be a flop by offering it to everyone. Cingular will automatically buy their product as part of the contract agreement. If they let everyone have ...

I had read an article that stated that Cingular had changed its voicemail system so that the iPhone's unique voicemail notification would work. There could be more factors involved than simply an exclusive agreement.

I also personally think that Apple has something up its sleeve with Cingular. The iPhone has EDGE. Cingular is upgrading to HSDPA. I would think a natural update would be to have HSDPA as well, and also 2 cameras - one on the front, one on the back, to facilitate video conferencing.

I think it's also going to be a big step in AT&T's rebranding of Cingular to "at&t". This would be a much better at grabbing attention than simply "Cingular is now at&t".

On another note, I have to hand it to Cingular for overdeliveri...
