I was watching CNN today, and they recapped what apple wants to accomplih with the iPhone. Steve Jobs wants to take 1% of the US market share. This equates to 10 million handsets. Apple sold an estimated 23.5 million ipods last year. Jobs seems a little over confident with his 10mil mark considering that the iPhone doesn't offer the storage that the ipods can offer. Let's be real here Jobs: a lot of people love your products, but trying to reach this goal by only offering your product on one carrier is ignorant. This move is similar to limiting the ipod for only Mac OS users. Mark my words Jobs, you will not sell 10 mil iPhones this year, unless of course, you pull your head out of your Apple and offer this across CDMA/evdo platforms. Check...

They wanted the widest possible market share of an extremely fragmented market. GSM is the only real choice, because it allows them to sell the same device the world over with no modification. Of the GSM operators in the U.S., Cingular is clearly the leader. With all that in mind, they have a pretty good shot at taking 1%. Will they do it in 2007? I dunno - I'd suspect no, but never underestimate Apple.

Also keep in mind that the best selling iPods are not the 30 & 80 gig models but the nanos & shuffles. Not everyone wants or needs to take that much music with them, and the small ones are quite popular.

What would be the point of setting up 3G data when it already has wifi? If they were going to implement downloading to the dev...

You mentioned Cingular being the largest US carrier. This is so true. But when a truly hot product comes out, it's foolish for any company to close their doors on other large companies. I use Best Buy and the PS3 as an example in other posts. Would Sony benefit from finding the largest consumer electronics retailer like Best Buy, and shutting out everyone else? If a company wants to sell some serious units, they don't close doors. I'd say failing to offer the iPhone to countless other GSM carriers all the way through 2009 is shutting the door.

SB,

One thing I hadn't considered was this...

How much did Cingular pay to get this agreement? I'm guessing it must have outweighed their profit estimates were they to offer the device on other carriers (specifically T-Mobile). What do you think?

Not to mention T-Mobile shelled out a lot of money in the AWS Austion.... Im sure they don't need to shell out a bunch more for an exclusive on a high-end expensive smartphone when they've got other things to work on.

Cell phone service isn't independent of reseller channels. Sony actually could get away with selling the PS3 through Best Buy, because the customer doesn't deal with Best Buy for more than a few minutes. True, it would be nice for Apple to sell it GSM unlocked, but they'll reach far more customers by associated with a carrier. Cingular is the most obvious choice, simply because of GSM and the sheer number of customers they have already.

what about that article a few odd months ago, about how someone could keep their phone if they switch carriers? So wouldn't they have to give an unlock code for it?

10 million Handsets? Cingular only has about 60 million customers, do they really think 1/6 of Cingular's customer base is going to buy this phone? That's expecting too much

Not U.S. 1% of 60 Million does not equal 10 million. . .

it's 1% of 957 million units sold in 2006 or about 10 million. I was just stating Cingular only has 60 million customers. I also doubt they ment US sale as 10 million cingular customer are not going to buy this product. Maybe if it was as cheap as the RAZR, since Moto sold 50 million of those worldwide. I wonder how the top manufacters are going to react to this phone. Nokia, Moto, LG, Samsung, etc... I doubt they really want this cutting into their profits.

Right, but the original poster misquoted Steve - he was referring to the world cellphone sales when he said a billion.

Honestly, most of the people that would want this phone won't care about the difference between the networks. Most also won't care about having lower storage capacity. As someone else mentioned here, some of the most popular iPods are the nano and shuffle which have very limited storage capacity.

Granted, you'll have a handful of tech people that really want the better connection speeds and such, and (as is clear by the posts in this forum) a lot of extraordinarily biased fanboys that are going to cry about the phone not being on Verizon, but the masses won't care about these things.

It's not one product. iPhone is a line of products, just like iPod. Cingular will offer multiple iPhone models over the next several years.

... unless of course, you pull your head out of your Apple and offer this across CDMA/evdo platforms.

Not gonna happen. I asked the question in Cingular's iPhone press conference, and Cingular made it very clear that their multi-year US exclusivity covers all models and all radio technologies. There will be no CDMA iPhone in the US for at least two years.
