I could not conceder this device unless wifi was the major way of getting on the net. edge is old technology I bet the reason why apple choice to sell it this way is so that they can sell one device worldwide hopefully they will offer a evdo cdma device I can use on verizon until then I cant conceder it, and for all you cdma haters the technology evolution from gsm is cdma (wcdma) world wide so get over it

Dont worry, this is the first release of the phone.
You will see changes to it over the first months of its release. EDGE is fine for the bulk of what it needs to do.
at 500$ for 4gb and 600$ for 8gb
I dont think it will set world on fire, yet.
But RIM and PALM really need to wake up or they will be dead soon, if someone makes and app that will act like activesync, enabling tie in's to exchange servers, this device will cause Blackberry's, Treo's and Q's to die out quickly.
Since the price will also drop in the first year its out. and the capacity will increase.

There was probably no 3G due to battery life issues, I'll bet.

I predict a 3rd party power pack add-on for this thing in the first few months its out.
Its powering the following.

battery 1 powers the ipod parts
battery 2 powers the phone

Power hungry parts are as follows
1. Bluetooth
2. Wifi
3, Screenbacklight
4. tilt sensor
5. CPU
6. the touch screen sensors
Battery life will be quite the achilles heel for this thing. (hope I spelled achillies right)

Maybe not. They did right batt-life-wise by not going with 3G yet, plus I'll bet the 4GB and 8GB capacities mean flash memory (a la Nano), instead of a power-hungry hard drive.

The batt life will likely be decent.

Palm and RIM probably aren't too worried. Business users probably aren't going to use this device considering how most enterprise users (Most of the PDA phone market) have a major dependency on windows and the enterprise app supported. These are two different niches.

Word.

If it did have 3G, people would then be complainin' about the s***y battery life. 👀

We don't hate cdma [at least I don't] we like the freedom we get with our phones on gsm.

Verizon strips out too many features from their phones and you can't buy and unlock cdma phone.

I don't care what you call it. Allow me to use all features the phone manufacturer intended not just the ones you can't make money off of and therefore strip out.

ya when i had verizon i could barely go to any websites, everything got blocked or stripped down i hated it, now on my sidekick and dash ive had i can do anything i want, and they work the same way cingular does so it will be great

and yes tuminatr, people would complain about it, and once doctors and scientists got involved they would be complaining about radiation to the brain for that network that still hasnt been resolved yet. Id rather see a 5-6 hour talk life on the battery during steve job's keynote than 30 min to 1 hour battery life with a 3g network, not worth the faster 1-2 seconds download time per webpage

Obviously, there will be updated iPhones coming out in the future, letting Apple sell $500 device over and over again to early adopters. Adding HSDPA isn't probably a huge challenge for now, but hey, Apple should have something to annouce for Christmas 2007 or MacWorld 2008, right?

I is so obvious why do you have to point it out? And somewhere in the press releases and analyses yesterday I saw that this is something that surely will be remedied soon.
