Groundbreaking?!

I hope so, phones need to go in a new direction.
Is this not a 3G phone?!

Nope, EDGE only. But that doesn't surprise me. Once Cingular's got their 3G network more widespread, they'll make a killing off of the next iPhone.

Damn, I wish they'd gone CDMA. I would love for VZW to have picked this up.

Why would a computer company make something that's limited to such a small market? They just got onto Intel chips to try and be more compatible. Going onto CDMA would be a step in the wrong direction.

Also, I can just imagine Verizon trying to force Apple to use the Verizon UI on it. 🤣

Ha ha, that's what I was thinking. "Sorry if it's not Windows it has to use the Verizon UI. Nope sorry, Mr. Jobs. No exceptions."

haha ya seriously...i think cingular was a good decision, and im very happy they didnt put 3G on it...the battery life on this baby is already not that long imagine a 3G network eating about 10X's that much battery...EDGE is good and safe and good enough to use with this bad boy

verizon sucks. they would've ruined everything Apple stands for and insisted on their ****ty logo all over it.

Right on the logo part.

You don't see a cingular logo on it 🙂

There's a Cingular logo by the screen.

CDMA is basically small market compared to GSM, it would be idiotic for them to initially have a CDMA phone. Apple is a global marketer, they want to make sure they can sell it in more places then North America, and a few other countries.

This phone definitly looks groundbreaking to me. I have never seen anything like this. This phone would almost make grounds for me to switch from verizon to cingular, 🤣 . anyways... I would assume it's 3G, considering its the most feature packed "phone" I have ever seen. 😁

it says EDGE, so I would think no 3G.

Yes, because we all live under a WiFi blanket??? The only place I can find WiFi in my city is at home, Borders and Starbucks. That isn't going to help me walking downtown, on the bus, or driving down the highway.

I hope nobody's gonna be using WiFi while they're driving down the highway 😳

And we all live in a blanket of 3G??!!
Most people in relatively populated areas can find wifi.. my crappy town of 60k, i can find wifi practically anywhere. Add 3G? add another $100 and a few more mm in thickness. Good move by apple.

I mean, I would like for it to be 3G but if it's not going to be used as a tethered device and only for causal to moderate web browsing, it's not too bad. Although, I will admit, not being 3G just about leaves it out for me.

A) You shouldn't be browsing the internet if you're driving, especially on a highway

B) Sure, having no wifi walking down the street won't help you, but that's where EDGE kicks in. It's not like the phone limits your internet connection to somewhere where there's wifi

Jan 9, 2007, 6:39 PM
Yes but EDGE SUCKS!! And yes, I do use the phone on the highway when other people are driving..

But the point it that it is a phone, it is meant to be portable. I shouldn't have to look for WiFi. It is a huge oversight and it is going to hinder what this device can actually do.

I don't think EDGE sucks, but it isn't 3G. I agree with those who are saying that it's a flaw that the phone doesn't have 3G. I'd prefer 3G, but I really don't use the internet on my phone. I can say I'm almost certain that eventually Apple will release an iPhone with 3G.

In the mean time, perhaps Cingular will offer some kind of tethered WiFi plan with an internet one? For example, when you're in range of a Cingular WiFi spot, it'll connect. To make things easier, perhaps they can even be nice and include locations near you in the Map software the iPhone is supposed to have.

As for Sprint of Verizon ever getting it, I sincerely doubt that. Sprint and Verizon and the other CDMA carriers have recently gotten the SLVR, but it doesn't hav...

It is not 3g. it has Edge, Bluetooth 2.0 and Wifi though. It is running a full version of os X. This is going to be a sweet phone. Check out Engadget.com for the live blog of the Apple Keynote.

It will come out on Cingular BTW.

Don't worry, they'll release a 2.0 with 3G which will force you to buy the new one. And then once you get the 3G model, then they'll release the 4G with WIMAX take even more of your hard earned money.

I hope they release a WiMax version, but that means it wont be a Cingular phone because Cingular announced NO PLANS for 4G in 2007 or 2008.. And Sprint will be launched in Chicago and D.C. before year end.

Point is, a large group of people will wet their pants and run out to to buy every single new version that is released. But hey, it's your hard earned money, so far be it for me to tell you what to do with it. 😎

Well quick, let me move to Chicago or DC just for WiMax! Please! Cingy is raising the speeds of their 3G network to be faster than the WiMax network. Besides...when your going to be getting 4, 5, 7, 10, 15 Mbps...does that extra 1/2 second mean THAT much? C'mon lets be serious. OK...my car is faster than your, your phone is faster, my internet connection is faster and your dog is faster...all by about 1 second per page view...does it matter?
...

Jan 9, 2007, 6:32 PM
Have you ever used the Cingular EDGE network? We aren't talking about 1 second page views. Plus, with a multimedia device like that I would hope that I am doing more than just viewing web pages (which are full HTML by the way and EDGE will die trying to load) but I would hope to stream some video and music..

The POINT is that both Sprint and VZW have launched 2Mbps data in well over 100 cities and have devices that actually use it!!!

Yep, groundbreaking. Its a high end phone directed to people that don't want to shell out $300 on an iPod so I'm SURE that $600 on a phone will be right up their alley.

Oh, and no stylus, no keyboard, and no high speed data? Come on. Its a media player that can make phone calls..

Guess I won't be needing an iPhone after all..

True, it's a rather glorified & complicated mediaplayer, but DAY-AM! What a Media player! This is a majorly awesome little package. Everyone and their dog has been clamoring for this thing, and [soon] now, they can have it. This is gonna be huge.

And did you see the OS? It's not some hacked to bits, Windows Jr Lite. or a java interface that's barely capable of browsing & calling at the same time, this is full blown OSX.

If you've ever used a mac, you'd see how huge this is.

I don't see how this is necessarily true. Half of the US uses GSM as does the vast, vast majority of the rest of the world. I'm not knocking CDMA, it has its advantages. But in the grand scheme of things it's a niche market.
...

Jan 9, 2007, 6:37 PM
Actually, there are more CDMA customers in the US than GSM, and growing.

Cingular might be big now, but I think that is all going to change when they go back to AT&T and people start remembering why they left AT&T in the first place.

Go rain on someone else's parade. You're obviously ticked off that Verizon isn't going to get the iPhone.

I'm happy that you love VZW. Enjoy your crappy UI and disabled functions.

This is a thread about the iPhone. It's not for "OMG! Doode! Cingular suxs so bad!!11! Verizon rawks!" You come off sounding like a little kid thats pissed because you're stuck with VZW.

BTW, we'll see about Sprints "4G" network. I doubt it will launch in '07.

VZW huh? Umm, well actually I'm a Sprint guy thanks. You know, we are the ones enjoying the largest network (we can roam on VZW, Alltel, and anyones analog network FOR FREE), we have the largest high speed data network and we get to use VZW and Alltels for free.

As for Sprints 4G network, I'm sure it will begin launch in 2007 because they actually have a commitment to their network, unlike Cingular who didn't launch 3G until 2006 (Sprint was 2003).

Anyway, I'm not the only one who said any of this.. I mean lets just see what the media says.. http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/the-iphone -is-not-a-smartphone/

And partnering with Cingular, or AT&T, or Bells South or whoever they want to be this week..
