It's 2018 and I don't have 2G, 3G, or 4G service from T-Mobile where I live. How are they going to provide 5G coverage to every inch of the U.S by 2020?

The 600 mhz spectrum it acquired in the 2017 auction covers 100% of the nation allowing for nation wide coverage. They will still need more high band spectrum in the millimeter wave witch they plan on purchasing this /in this yrs auction to make everything come together.

Unfortunately 28Ghz signal can’t hardly penetrate a sheet of paper, much less a wall.
