Why WiMax when "3g" doesn't even work like "3g"?

I mean, shouldn't you actually reach "documented" speeds before moving on to new tech?

Lab speeds are always higher than actual real world speeds.

A 747 falling out of the sky and exploding 5 feet away from you couldn't provide a bigger exclamation mark for your statement.

Well actually I did some research and found that sprint never estimated a higher speed then what they are offering. The actual technology evdo predicts that it can go faster. But sprint never touted that or said they would. They moved on to wimax. So I am not sure what your point is?

Research? Got any links? Every tech that's been introduced in the past 5 years has claimed speeds far exceeding those demonstrated in real world conditions.

I can hit 1.4 Mbps down and 200+ up with a Merlin DO card from my living room. I'd be happy to post a screen shot. The quote before about lab vs real world is on point. In the real world we are competing for CDMA bandwidth on DO. The technology gives the subscriber with the best signal the highest priority. It would be like being at mcdonalds and the guy behind the counter takes care of the teenagers who know exactly what they want and have cash first, then goes to mom with the 4 kids, and then to grandma who isn't sure what she wants and is going to try and write a check. Best signal gets served first to get them out of the way. Consumers should ask what are they getting for their trouble. It's not like Apple is going Wimax, no iPhone ...

Bullseye. As soon as sprint offers the wimax service in my area, it's by by Comcast HSI/Cable and hello wimax and sat-tv. I would like to take my HSI on the road instead of having to use my evdo phone as a modem when I need to.

One of the FCC's requirements on the Sprint-Nextel merger was employ of their 2.5 GHz spectrum (both nextel and sprint had a lot) to cover I believe around 20-30 million persons by 2008.

Reason two. The sprint-nextel merger is a fiasco. Sprint has purged nextel and really pissed off the nextel subscriber base. Just look at their retention rates and new adds..not good. So rather than improve the basics, the Sprint executives are deploying their executive hype parachutes and pushing WiMAX hype to deflect attention to their horrible financial results.

This is will fail. WiMAX is likely going to be worse than CDMA Rev B unless sprint adds intelligent antenna technologies to wimax but not to cdma. If you add it to both your back at a draw.

The merger was not the primary reason for all the iDen issues. Prior to the merger, Nextel gambled on a new vocoder that did not perform anywhere near the level promised by the vendor. Google vocoder and Nextel, very interesting read. Before his departure, former Nextel COO Tim Donahue admitted it was a mistake and spent his time at the new company fixing the issue. The installation of the new voder reduced capacity causing an increase in blocked calls and thus churn. Not saying that Sprint was/is innocent in the recent under performance, just that there was a big problem before the merger even began.

Boy oh boy, you know I have heard alot of bullshit in my life... but you really take it to the max.... SPRINT ALSO COMMITED TO A TECHNOLOGY THAT NO ONE ELSE WAS DOING AT THE TIME... CDMA! But yeah that just took them to the ground didn't it????? That was just a big mistake wasn't it????? GIVE ME A BREAK... Sprint always takes risk on data... and guess who comes out on top with data every single time... S P R I N T.

Sprint Didn't take a chance on data they took a chance on a voice platform (CDMA) that maybe someday would be slightly more useful than GSM if people ever wanted data. It was about voice capacity not data.

CDMA was badly overhyped but it did in fact prove to have an advantage lver GSM for voice once the korean's helped solve the breathing cell issue.

With WiMAX its a different game. It has NO...NONE...zilcho...zero advantage over EV-DO Rev b and possibly even REV A. It may be worse, less spectrally efficient. So what is the point? Deploying it is a step backwards. Mobile WiMAX also does not work or at least that is what my sources tell me. It is not stable and it is grossly inefficient and the uplink link margin sucks.

Now think a...

Everyplace I've used my sprint phone for data, evdo has worked top notch (Ky, OH, IN, all over MI, Il, WI, MN) Do I care if it works in Backwater Montana? No. It works as advertised everyplace I've needed it to work. Voice or data. Even when using the PAM on the highway, it works as well as if I was sitting 500 foot from a tower. So, not sure what your problem is.
