Sprint Updates WiMax Rollout Plans
Why WiMax when "3g" doesn't even work like "3g"?

Lab speeds are always higher than actual real world speeds.
A 747 falling out of the sky and exploding 5 feet away from you couldn't provide a bigger exclamation mark for your statement.

Well actually I did some research and found that sprint never estimated a higher speed then what they are offering. The actual technology evdo predicts that it can go faster. But sprint never touted that or said they would. They moved on to wimax. So I am not sure what your point is?
Research? Got any links? Every tech that's been introduced in the past 5 years has claimed speeds far exceeding those demonstrated in real world conditions.

Reason two. The sprint-nextel merger is a fiasco. Sprint has purged nextel and really pissed off the nextel subscriber base. Just look at their retention rates and new adds..not good. So rather than improve the basics, the Sprint executives are deploying their executive hype parachutes and pushing WiMAX hype to deflect attention to their horrible financial results.
This is will fail. WiMAX is likely going to be worse than CDMA Rev B unless sprint adds intelligent antenna technologies to wimax but not to cdma. If you add it to both your back at a draw.

One of the FCC's requirements on the Sprint-Nextel merger was employ of their 2.5 GHz spectrum (both nextel and sprint had a lot) to cover I believe around 20-30 million persons by 2008.

CDMA was badly overhyped but it did in fact prove to have an advantage lver GSM for voice once the korean's helped solve the breathing cell issue.
With WiMAX its a different game. It has NO...NONE...zilcho...zero advantage over EV-DO Rev b and possibly even REV A. It may be worse, less spectrally efficient. So what is the point? Deploying it is a step backwards. Mobile WiMAX also does not work or at least that is what my sources tell me. It is not stable and it is grossly inefficient and the uplink link margin sucks.
Now think a...
