I don't believe they are locking the phones to fight thieves, I bet it's because T-Mobile hurt them with that promotion that allows Verizon customers to come to T-Mobile and use their Verizon phone and have it paid off. Verizon always comes up with dumb things to make it seem like they are the best out there but really they are an overrated company that charges waaaaay to much for their service

How can you ding Verizon for something that T-Mobile is already doing? All the other guys are already locking their phones. Been that way forever.

It's because Verizon agreed to sell unlocked phones as part of the nationwide 700MHz license they got from the FCC.. But i'm willing to bet the're instituting this now during the republican ran FCC because they know they wont be questioned for violating the contract they agreed too.
