I only count 137 cities here, and these are cities not markets because many of these cities fall in the same market as others in the list. Way to cheat your way to the top again Cingular. I'll be sticking with my Sprint high speed, thanks!

If you look at Sprints list, they have done the exact same thing. However, they call each city a metropolitan area.

I understand Sprint also lists all of the cities, but they don't refer to them all as a metro area. The number of metro areas Sprint claims is less than the cities they list on their site.

Cingular on the other hand says they cover 160 metro areas and only covers 137 cities.

If anyone has ever been to Allentown, it is not a "metro area" by any stretch of the imagination.. If anything it is part of the Philadelphia metro area.

There are areas that are covered but not 'turned on' to the public yet as the final testing is being completed.

When they say metro areas, I believe they are talking about the town (allentown) and surrounding cities. It wouldn't be feasible to list every town as it's covered.

Milwaukee/Madison are slated for Q12007. Most of the towers are already in place. Everything is in the final testing phase for these areas.

Hold the 3G handset! I picked up my Blackjack in Waukesha, Wi (West of Milw.) tonight and was greeted with the big fat 3G! Confused me at first, but I won't say I'm not thrilled.

There was no Wisconsin or Minnesota but I've heard that Milwaukee fired up last night. Rochester, MN fired up this morning - have been seeing download speeds of 700 to 900kbps (via dslreports Mobile Speed Test).

Agreed. Seattle for instance covers all of its outlying towns, and the seperate city of Tacoma. Tacoma is by no stretch of the imagination a burb of Seattle. However Tacoma Wa isn't listed.

Additionally, what they don't tell you is how crappy their 3G services work. I've complained to them vehemently about four cities where I continue to have major connectivity problems (Tempe, Boston, Austin and Houston), and basically their response is, "We're sorry, but there's nothing we can do". That's after spending 45 minutes uninstalling and reinstalling software, checking com ports and disabling firewalls.

I dig their voice services but stay far away if you depend on data.

Instead of just flaming it, please explain to us your issues:

I have an LG CU500 TETHERED to my laptop and get awesome speeds in AZ, so there has got to be something going on on your end if you are using a laptop card.

What kind of card are you using, and on what kind of plan? Also, what software are you using to connect?

I'm in Tucson, but I travel to Phoenix area semi-frequently. Sometimes if I'm in a building I get poor reception, but you have to remember that in Arizona Cingular has NO 850 MHz spectrum, all 850 is tied up in TDMA. So in AZ we are stuck with 1900 MHz which does not have very good building penetration.

Other than that, 3G is awesome. On internet speed tests I get around 400-600 kbps, but I live in the college neighborhood around the U of A, so I'm sure the channels are hogged by people accessing the net around that area and campus.

I use a CU500 with the MEdia Max 1000 plan, I wouldn't give it up for anything. CU500 is the best phone I've ever had.

Ash, it's really a long story. Has to do with 3G hand-offs from UMTS/HSDPA back to EDGE, signal strength, and dropped connections. I've worked in the wireless industry for a number of years, and Cingular are playing "games" with their customers and the FCC. But this is just my conspiracy theory and I don't want to bore you.

My main intent was not to "flame" Cingular's data service - I've been a customer of Houston Cellular/Cingular for almost 13 years. However my main point was to state how easy it is for a company to advertise (and brag on) a cutting-edge service and how difficult it is to support and deliver said service. They continue with the full-page ads in USA Today touting their data service, when in reality, it's poorly implemen...

I live in Orlando, FL and work in Celebration, FL. I get great 3G service at home and at work. When I go into Kissimmee, FL where there is no 3G service, the trade-off from 3G to EDGE works just fine for me. I am using the Cingular Sync (Samsung A707) with Mini Opera as the browser. I get no problems on that trade-off. When I go from EDGE to a 3G area, I do have to restart my browser but it is something that I don't have a problem doing. Later.

And once again... what device and plan do you have? I know there is a lot of constant 3G/EDGE handoff in Arizona because there is a lot of terrain change. Tell me exactly what you have, give me facts please, don't simply rant about how much trouble it is giving you.

Not all cities covered are on this list by any means if you really do some actual research into this.
