Cingular 3G In Most Of 100 Largest Cities
still trying to understand......
The reason of course is faster speeds, but they had to upgrade to UMTS to have access to HSDPA as it's an upgrade in itself.
The rush is, they've got to catch up to the other companies that are further ahead of them with their own 3G rollout.

how it is that Cingular is going to jump from UMTS to HSDPA without the dust settling on them getting to 3g. whats the rush?
It's always a rush. We've already got one tech in our hands that hasn't delivered promised data rates, so we might as well have a new tech that does the very same damn thing.

Cingular never intended to launch UMTS. ATT launched it pre-merger like the other guy said, but Cingular's plan was to always launch HSDPA. They only offered UMTS in the 6 cities ATT had used. They have since upgraded those cities to HSDPA.
