This so-called "mobile" world is getting out of hand

There was an interesting article somewhere that I read recently. It's basic theme was that we are creating a very bad situation with all these electronic devices (i.e. mobile phone with e-mail, Nintendo, Playstation, etc...). It is preventing us from being social, preventing us from going out, keeping us from doing more outdoor activities, keeping us attached to work for longer than we need to be. This is madness.

I have a PDA/Mobile phone and after I read the article I all of sudden understood it. I am attached to the damn device! I cannot leave it alone, always on it. I was at a birthday party this past weekend and found that I was isolating myself because I was using the PDA checking e-mail and news etc... A little self control...

understood... last friday night i switched back to my old phone which is a non pda... i was ok with it but not more than 10 minutes after it had been activated i switched back to my pda... my mind would let me stop thinking about the fact of not have my email... web access with decent screen size... the ease of text messaging... i rely to much on my pda... but most people that have them do...

An interesting thread...I'm glad it's being discussed. This is especially close to home for me because I've been wanting to switch to a PDA/Smartphone for a while now. As addicted as I am to my cell phone and laptop...I shudder to think what I would be like if I ended up getting a PDA. It's actually crossed my mind to avoid purchasing a PDA for these reasons specifically. I tend to think that even those who are able to exercise more self control than others - even they should "unplug" more often! 😎

C'mon, 50 years ago we didn't know what was happening one county, one state over. We only knew those in our community. Now we chat with people worldwide and can follow news stories that affect us easier. The phones are not making us a certain way, they are only amplifying traits. Same with video games, people act like without violence on TV and video games all kids would be peaceful and calm. Not true at all. It's like tripping on the sidewalk, then blaming the sidewalk for being "in the way".

Well, that's not exactly what this thread was discussing. What we were discussing was an over-reliance on said technology, to the point where family and social behavior is impacted (negatively). There's no doubt that one can find information on any given subject more easily today than they could 50 or even 10 yrs ago. All we were talking about was feeling the need to tie oneself to a device (perhaps because of a job) so much that it pulls us away from that which is ultimately more important. Now, not everyone is faced with this dilemma. But, for those of us who are dealing with this (or will be) - I think it's an important thing to be conscious of. 😎

I think people are confusing cause and effect. It is possible that there are some obsessive people who over rely on a single, new, means of communication, but it seems bizarre to me to blame the new mode of communication.

More communication = good thing.

I have to say that I find myself begining to communicate like my kid... I am am cell, and then on the train on my PDA messaging and then checking my stocks and news and then messaging again...and holding down a conversation at the same time... Perhaps we are just evolving into beings that are better at multi-tasking?? My old complaint remains. Their is nothing intuitive or convenient about the mobile UI. When is someone going to fix this???

I can't even read the numbers on my phone, let alone any content on the browser 🤤 Like any medium, advertising is one way to monetize content. But, the operators need to offer consumers a better way to access the content. Whether ad supported or paid subscription, what good is it if you can't find it on the deck.

u presented a really good point, i love technology and electronics and gadgets but i am fortunate that im that type of person who can turn all that crap off and have a good time with people and forget about the world and what not. i think we all need to "unplug" once in a while. its only natural that in modern society we can become disconnected w/ people and the environment.

Internet and cell phones, and video games, do not have any inherent power whatsoever to keep you from going outside. It is YOUR fault that you can't put the damn things down, get off your butt and go outside yourself.

Just because you lack self control does not mean you have the right to point your finger and blame everything for your faults..

I mean I have a Samsung T809, Nintendo DS lite, Xbox, Game Cube, atamagotchi, and a computer, and I'm not consumed by them on a daily basis, because I can put the things down and have a good time at the...
