Predictions for 2005

Okay, now that the show is over, it's time to predict what we'll see at the 2005 show in New Orleans. 😉

My predictions, in order of likelihood, are:
  • 2 megapixel cameras
  • Push-To-Stream Video
  • OLED displays (main, not just external)
  • The first commercial EV-DV (release C) phone, but only if Sprint chooses that route

Anyone else want to hazard a guess?

I agree with the 2 megapixel camera phones and possibly even pushing 3 and more that can record video. I also agree with the OLED displays, especially if it can help battery life. Also more high end phones and PDA phones without cameras due to the banning of camera phones in a lot of places.

Good point. I agree. That's an issue that caught a lot of companies off-guard. It's interesting to watch Nokia execs squirm when you ask them about that. They want to put a camera in everything, but they're taking a lot of heat for that now, especially on the 9500 and their smartphones.

One more prediction. Several handset makers will introduce phones that support cellular and wireless voice over IP. In other words they will connect to voice over IP operating on wireless networks such as 802.11b and then seamless switch to the cellular network. I would guess that Motorola and Nokia will probably have some models.

My guess (and hope) is that the MP3 and video playing will take off. Once memory cards in the 1-2GB range start to become more common, I think these multimedia features are a natural next step.

Wouldn't it be cool if Nokia (or whoever) and Apple made a cool iPod phone that also played MPG/AVI/QT/etc videos?
