"Select" videos?

bones boy

“We’ll select content that has the broadest appeal and the highest entertainment value,” Ms. Liang said.

So, who exactly "approves" which videos are available? The Government? Ms. Liang? What makes her (or Verizon) an expert on what has entertainment value? I should celebrate this?

Will Verizon be placing Parental Advisory stickers on their cell phones? Will the videos have little tiny ratings in the upper right corner?

Shame on you Verizon. Your "service" defeats the purpose of YouTube.

... the age group Verizon is most trying to attract, by being "hip" and using the YouTube name, will be the ones most disappointed when they can't see the latest Britney Spears clothing malfunction, or the latest Michael Richards meltdown, because it does not conform to Verizon's entertainment "standards".

Watch.

Sing it, brother! This is just another vzw scam to suck even more money out of us than they already are with their bloated pricing. The whole philosophy of the company, standardizing phone os's, vcast and this...its a real turn off. OK, someone shut me up already, I've been ranting about this company for weeks now....

C'mon, if we want YouTube, we want You Tube, not Verizon's watered down version that costs a bunch. That's pretty much the opposite of what makes YouTube great.

This is NOT an extra charge, it's INCLUDED in the VCast package. Ok, it's $15 per month, that gives you unlimited Vcast, Mobile Web, A/T for GIN apps and GIN browsing.
Did Santa leave EVDO equipment at each one of vzw's cell sites so they can just give away free data? I don't see how this is a rip off.And for those of you who are complaining about "select" videos. I mean give me a break, do you actually think a smart large company will throw anything on their phones that is anything more than PG to PG-13. If you want something more graphic then use something that is not monitored by any goverment agency, ohh that would be the internet.
Don't you think shooting your own videos and uploading them from your phone to your own ...

Thanks for shedding light on that, I was under the impression all this time that the it was an *extra* charge, additional to the regular VCast thing.

I think people have every right to complain about the censorship, however. Yes, there's no question that these features are nice, but who the hell anointed Verizon as the morality police for us? I prefer my internet access (and yes, YouTube resides on the internet so that site is included) to be served up to me unfiltered so that *I* can decide which stuff I'll take and ...

ipersonally think that the fact that a company is selecting the videos to display is downright a turn-off. I also think that the ability to upload your videos through the phone is a great idea, except for the fact that we don't know if the videos you upload will have to be approved, for example, if you want everybody to see your video, as youtube currently allows. there are a lot of things i don't know about the service offered by verizon, so i can't say much about it yet, but i'm pretty dissapointed at the fact that the selection of videos is "limited" at the moment.

Actually NOT - No rights to complain. You can go to You Tube and see a dude getting F**ked by a horse in Washington.. If this content ended up on cell phones it would be lawsuits city against the cell phone companies. I'm not sure if you understand that people here like to SUE. If a big named cell phone company has this type of content on their phones then cash in America! The internet isn't policed by anyone so there is no one to ...

What? You can get sick porn on most Internet ready phones, how is YouTube differant? You can't type and I don't know where you are coming from, but you seem like that last one to complain about ignorance...lawsuits against the city for porn on cell phones? What? Who cares, they won't win the suit, so why bow to that pressure? T-Mob is in Seattle, and SideKicks and MDAs JUST put parental controls, and if you don't have that you can go to PregnantPissing.com or whatever sick $#!+ you like. Wise up...

What is this, Communist Russia? We DO have a right to complain, to make our opinion heard, just as you have a right to try to refute our answers.

Your reasoning is faulty.

According to your logic, then that means corporations like Dell, HP Compaq, Sony (VAIO), Lenovo, Toshiba, etc...

i don't know...maybe it's just me, but i didn't see anything about censorship in the article. i saw that there would only be selece videos, but that's different. that could simply mean that only the top 100 most popular are available, or something along those lines...

i do agree that it would be a lot cooler if you had access to the entire youtube library, but that's a massive amount of content, it is possible that they are eventually going to open up the entire library to mobile users, IF this becomes a popular thing.

Uhh... Dell, HP, Compaq, etc are equipment manufacturers, the same as Motorola, Nokia, or LG. ISPs are service providers, not content providers. Verizon is mainly a service provider, but also provides content through vcast. And you said it yourself, they will go after 'the entities making the content available,' wouldn't that be verizon?

If inappropriate material did show up, both youtube and verizon could be held accountable, which is why they are working together to select videos.

It also says the partnership may be the first of many. So if Sprint or Cingular work with youtube to only put select videos, does that make any better?
