Re: User error should be rare
If there wasn't a commercial showing it, and the store rep didn't tell you, you would have NEVER figured out that the iPhone has a multi-touch screen. Since there is no other phone like it, you would have not known that it was even possible. So to the uninformed user, they will think their phone is broken becuase they can't zoom in to a picture.
BUT... since apple made such a big deal about it, pretty much anyone now knows about it.
When a new or non-standard feature comes out, the end user will need to be somehow notified of these kind of things. It's one of the things that each rep is supposed to go over with any customer buying one of the phones, as well as some other things that make this phone different.
Do I think that the interface is perfect? No, I would make a few changes to it for sure.
Do I think everyone should read the user guide? Not even close.
Do I think that someone should have asked an informed rep about why they are having trouble with the touch screen. Of course.
If I had the iPhone, and couldn't figure out the zoom, I would have looked in the book. If I didn't have the book, I maybe would have, I don't know asked someone. Maybe call the store, or go down to the store and ask them there. (Or googled it...) Rather than saying how much the phone sucks.
