A Few Words On Bias...

Eric M. Zeman

Sorry, guys, but I am not going to stand to be called biased.

I am not loyal to one manufacturer, nor one carrier. I have no emotional ties to any device or service.

Each and every review we perform of phones is based on facts that arise during our experience with the phones we test. When we spot something good, we point it out, when we spot something bad, we call it out, too.

A lot of you are complaining that we compared the Instinct to the iPhone. Sprint positioned this device as an iPhone competitor, so using the iPhone as a basis for comparison is entirely natural.

You might want to remember that we were hard on Apple for the faults that the iPhone has. It has many.

No device, no manufacturer, no carrier has a perfect...

Heres the thing, phonescoop called the Instinct an iphone-clone which one can miscue as trying to be like something else in actuality it is not, that alone shows bias especially since there is nothing in Sprints marketing that labels it a clone of anything let alone the iphone.

You guys are normally fair and honest in your reviews.
But you are being stubborn with this one. You have been honest in your experience with the device. You had issues with the touch screen. That's fine, to the best of your knowledge, it could be just the one in front of you, or it could be all. You didn't really state anything to this nature.

This leads the average consumer who is unaware that it could be just the one phone you have in front you to believe that all of them are bad. Hopefully they look at other reviews, but they may not.

As a respected source of information on mobile phones, it is your responsibility to provide an object point of view on a phone in your reveiws. By overlooking many of the important features of this...

From the above review, a few quotes (for those without full web access) :

"The new iPhone 3G will be more evenly matched, but even the Instinct gets points for its multimedia messaging, voice dialing and video recording."

"The Web browser wasn't quite as easy to use as we had hoped, the camera lacked editing features, and the Instinct's call and video quality were variable. However, even with those caveats, the Instinct remains a powerful, innovative cell phone with a loaded feature set and an appealing design."

"On the other hand, the Instinct doesn't suffer from the usability drawbacks that we saw on the Glyde. We rarely had to tap menu selections twice to register our choice. Also, the display recognized our selections when we to...

Is it possible to accept that maybe, just mayybe, this phone did not live up to everyones review expectations? I guess it is possible that they got a lemon to review, but if everyone feels so strongly against the review, ignore it and go get your Instinct when it's released.
Your experience with the phone will not be the same as Phonescoop's, this just very well maybe your dream phone. Why bash the review, a better question would be: Why does everyone want this phone to do so well? I have my hopes up for this phone as well, but some people are calling out for blood after reading the review.

If this phone does well, then my paycheck does as well, and that lends some bias towards anything I say about it.

I just want a fair playing field. That's all I am asking for.

Is there such a thing as that? I mean, when you are asking for a personal review of a phone, that's essentially asking for someone's opinion. Someone's opinion is not going to dis way me getting an Samsung Instinct, but I will wait a little longer to get one. Maybe after some minor issues are fixed; I know there will be some, given Samsungs horrible track record with releasing buggy phones ( personal experience).

"It took several tries to get a response out of the touchscreen."

Vs.

It took several tries to get a response out of the touchscreen... not at all like the iPhone, which responded right away."

You did not have to add this thread. The problem is that Sprint and its employees were banking on this device bringing them from the depths of the Pacific back to land and once you pointed out its deficiencies, the crying began. You know its bad when they have issues with you comparing it to the iPhone when all of Sprint's advertising has been trying to compare it to the iPhone. Although the phone has MMS, A2DP, and Sprint TV, it just is not a overall more user friendly device. Like I said, Sprint is wasting 100 million dollars. Apple's hardware and software are much superior and that is why the user experience with Apple products are high. Looks like the only people buying this phone is going to be the ones who wants so bad for Sprint...

I don't think its so much that they're banking on it to bring them out of a rut because last I checked, they weren't in a rut. When I read a phone review, as I have over the last 5 years, here on phonescoop, I want to read about the features that the phone has, of course the call quality, the data, all the things that there are to the phone. ALL of them. Good and bad. I don't want to hear everything being compared to another phone. Now in a comparison of course, I'd want to hear about both phones in completion. Not just the touch screen and and a user interface that i'm not used to... I like Apple, don't get me wrong. Hell, I'm typing this from a MacBook connected to a Sprint connection card. But there are so many things that the Ins...

I think you put it nicely here.

This wasn't a comparo, it was a review. And while it's impossible to not compare it to competition, it seems strange to not even note some of the features that actually make it a great phone.

I have noticed some things I don't like about it, but overall as a phone, I think it's one of the best phones sprint has had.

A review as complete as the CNET review is what I expected from an "In Depth" review here, but we were given what they posted. A hurried, and biased mess of slop. They did have some good info in there, but the omission of so much is what all the hubbub is about.

Thanks ojdidit84, for helping to keep this civilized.
