Actually, they would work with another carrier

"Although an unlocked Sprint handset would honestly not work with any other national carrier's network"

Actually they would work with any other CDMA carrier such as Verizon (but no web as VZW uses BREW and Sprint uses Java), Alltell (same web situation), Metro PCS, Cricket, U.S. Cellular. However the ESN would have to be added to the data base for a subscriber to activate the phone which most carriers will not do. They could be used if you could get another carrier to add the phone to the system, but most features such as picture mail, text messaging and web would not be functional so you would be stuck with a fancy phone that you could not use any of the features.

That's where CDMA carriers suck!Their phones are incompatible with each other network.
Thanks god to GSM.Just switch Sim Card, download all the settings for Text,MMS,Web and you good to Go.

hmmm... thats a individual carrier choice, while i have no idea how gsm phones work almost all companies have policies against using non-branded phones on their accounts. But U.S. Cellular isnt as advanced as Verizon, all i do is punch in a verizon esn and there is no database, it takes it just fine, i just have to use nam 2 to not make that roaming triangle annoy me.

GSM carriers are fine with using unlocked unbranded phones. I use one myself on T-Mobile and it works great.

I have t-mobile and don't have a t-mobile phone. When i do have to call because of any issue, they don't start to blame the phone or anything. They actually start to troubleshoot the issue properly. If only comcast was the same way... (grr)

Verizon sucks! Do you like being a Verizon prisoner? Do you like being told what you can and can't put on your phone?

I have been a customer for Sprint for 7 years now. I enjoy my freedom with Sprint. I can put whatever I want on my phone, I can download from whomever I want.

Actually, when CDMA2000 disappears, then AT&T can buy back Qwest and Verizon, then we can all go back to AT&T when a single mobile standard exists!

GSM as we know it now will disappear, and so will CDMA2000 as we know it now. From a consumer standpoint, to someone who doesn't know the differences, GSM's smart card transfers from phone to phone to with no problem, as long as the phone is compatible with the network (and not locked to another one), but with CDMA, you have to "ask" permission to use a phone you didn't buy recently from them (especially with E911).

There are less than legal ways around it, though. I found someone on Sprint that uses a Motorola RAZR V3c, and I asked the details, he said he had the ESN changed to match h...

Cingular and T-Mobile don't care if you use a non-branded unlocked GSM phone. Only qualifications is if they support their frequences.

Well, as long as you don't mind carrying a phone that can't make or recieve calls in our area, in which case, really enjoy your really cool phone.
Besides, with a GSM phone, you make it really, really easy for anybody to steal your phone at any time. I prefer the security and reliability of our service, thank you very much.

gsm does has security measures put in place, if someone steals my phone i can call cingular or tmobile to block the IMEI number and no matter what sim card they put in, or even attempt to lock it, that IMEI number is blacklisted and the phone is a paperweight, or i can do a sim deactivation, which will deactivate the sim card and not allow any other sim card in the phone

LOL! the imei lock is useless! it doesn't block a phone from registering and making calls on the network. and you can only deactivate your own SIM card, you can't do anything with the one that Mr. Thief puts in your phone. and thx to cingular's policy of not insuring the high end phones they offer (the ones most targeted by theft), there is no incentive to register the IMEI with the carrier. CDMA is much more secure, and thieves know it!

Nope, you're wrong. I've seen it work on a customers phone. Customer came into the store with a phone she got from a friend to activate on prepay. After putting the new SIM in the phone, the phone locked up. It was not another carries phone, it was cinglar equipment. The rep saw that the phone was reported stolen in the system.

so nikg was wrong because i swore i said that if someone asks cingy or tmo to block the imei number(in the event that their phone was stolen), it will not work or register at all with the system because its blacklisted

What?! A phone can be stolen either way, GSM or CDMA. That was pointless statement. I've had GSM since 1998 and it's not easier to steal my phone than it is for someone to steal my boy's CDMA phone. Security? His i730 was stolen and never heard from again. I've never had a phone stolen and if it was, the SIM would be shut down immediately. Gain some knowledge before you make silly statements. 🙄

Hate to break the bubble here, but the i730 is a Nextel phone, meaning it runs off of the iDEN network, not CDMA. But the issue isn't wether someone can take the phone or not, its whether it will work once you steal it. GSM requires relatively no "hacking" of any kind. The IMEI isn't broadcasted to the network, only the SIM info. IDEN phones are the generally same way.

They're right. Nextel is not CDMA. Nextel uses sim cards, just like GSM and they can be easily swapped to use in a stolen phone. 🤭

Actually, they probably won't work, well not permanantly. I have had custies get Verizon unlocked phones, put them on their USCC account, and sure the phone works, until they hit a Verizon tower, which resets the phone back to factory settings and causes USCC to count all your calls as roaming no matter where you are. I had 4 custies do it at Christmas, and all four had this happen.

I have a friend of mine who loved the Palm Treo 600 from Sprint sooooo much, he hacked it and uses it on Verizon. It makes calls, reads email, and connects to the web perfectly fine. He even has the attachment for navigation and it works without a hitch. He's used it for almost 2 years now, so it definitely is possible.

because the sprint phone would not have brew or the right messaging protocols, i don't believe most sprint phones would do much more than make phone calls on verizon, and that's if you could get verizon to add sprint esns to their database.

you may get sprint phones to fully work with regional carriers that also use java. i don't deny that at all.

as for smartphones, people can hack them to do wonderful things, so i can't confirm or deny whether they would work. however i'm sure we can all agree that smartphones are a small minority of phones sold.
