Unified network!

Oh man, if this means there's only be ONE standard worldwide (no more GSM or CDMA - just... umm... GSMDMA or something) that would be fantastic! Instead of having to swap out entire chipsets for different markets, you just tune the frequencies via software. Cool beans.

I'm very skeptical about this whole "one network" thing.

It'll be great! CDMA & GSM will finally put to rest their bitter feud, and everybody will gather together & hold hands, then raise those hands and their voices as one & say "SCREW YOU [carrier X]" . . . because no matter how united we are in terms of Technology, our carriers will still be over chargiing us & giving us less than we're paying for.

Oh, and EVERY SINGLE PHONE will be the the 4G RAZR. . . . it's gonna be awesome!

Actually, there probably would be 2 or 3 other 4G RAZR copies, like the Samsung Slicendice, the LG Chop-late phone, and the Nokia 1337. 😉 😎

At first I was surprised by your title...and then I was punched in the face by your hilarious sarcasm/logic.

I'm skeptical because of all the proprietary tech these companies have invested in.

This should have been standardized years ago. Wireless services should be a commodity like telephones, rail roads, roads, running water, sewage, and electricity. They should all be built and created under the same standards and you should not be able to tell the difference from one quality of service to another, just like land line telephones and electricity. When I move I do not have to change the way I get electricity or even have to install new pipes for gas ( unless you are building a new development ). I should be able to take my phone and money and go some where else with out dishing out a huge start up cost, phone. What phone companies have now is a barrier to exit / transfer. If this works out the way everybody that is not running a ...

Remember, this standard is for Data not Voice and Data. So there will always be the GSM vs. CDMA competion. This is simply merging UMTS/EV-DO Rev 1(a) in to the final version of W-CDMA which has been known for years that it was coming. Actually if you look at the overall project plan that was established back in 2000 for this, it's behind schedule the merger and 4G deployment was suppose to be complete by 2010, not sure if they will make that date this late.

And Yes soon wireless data service will exceed the current cable/dsl speeds. Off course then those people will bump up their speeds so what does it matter (and with Verizon rolling out Fiber it will be a while before these technology merge into one).

This standard is certainly for voice as well. With data speeds that high, and blanket coverage available, companies would turn to the much more cost-efficient VoIP for their voice offerings...which we all know is voice service over a data network. So actually, if all carriers worldwide started to move in this unified direction...GSM and CDMA would eventually cease to exist.

And what may I ask, are you talking about UMTS and EVDO merging into WCDMA? UMTS is WCDMA.
