One 4G Device usable worldwide?

Does this mean that the 4G standard will mean that these devices can be carrier agnostic and as long as a carrier has 4G the device will work on it? Interoperatibilty and roaming will be much easier to implement this way.

don't forget that even if every carrier around the world manages to implement a single protocol (which this does not guarantee, but it does strongly encourage), that there are still a number of different bands for service. it is posiible, but i suspect unlikely, that every country will agree to operate 4G networks in the same set of spectrum. So unless maufacturers (and operators) decide they want to build world-band devices with a number of different bands, your dream of one device to use world-wide may not come true.

i suspect you're thinking this will be ulikely b/c of governmental bodies like the FCC that mandate the spectrum used, but wouldn't it make sense for this special interest group to push a truly unified standard (one that also involves the same spectrum). after all, it would be easier/cheaper on network operaters, phone manufactures, and ultimately for consumers, to have 1 standard for 4G that works the same with the same phone anywhere in the world. maybe i'm just sick of seeing all the lust-worthy 3G phones that only work for 2g here 🤤 😡 😢 😕

the umts spec actually includes an upload and download band. the entire rest of the world that has implemented umts has adopted that band, but the us couldn't. it IS easier, cheaper, nicer for a single band to exist. but that doesn't mean governments will cooperate.

Forget the rest of the world, let's do it here. Like the great majority of American's I'll probably never go overseas. Shoot, some Americans never even leave the county they were born in. This idea would be great for our country. Like someone said earlier in this thread, all our other services are standardized, why can't our cellular technology be as well?

You know, I find it painful that there is a whole universe around us that we can't explore due to technological inadaquecies. But to have a whole world around you and CHOOSE not to explore it, amazes me.
