cingular has deployed 3G in how many markets π plus it works very slow compared with Sprint or verizons evdo. plus cingy is still in desperate need of fixing their voice quality. Still glad to have verizon
...
Oh yeah? But Cingular has rollover! π€£
...
Cingular needs to rollover themselves and make way for VZW slowly climbing back to #1
π€£
...
Well heck, there is still a 3 million plus difference in customers, right? So who knows what's going to happen in 07, with Mobile Tv, plus Cingular rolling out more 3G cities, so, we'll just have to wait and see around Spring of 07, bc Cingular already has an edge.

EDGE(2G) < EV-DO(3G)
EDGE IS SLOW BUT NEXT YEAR WILL BE AN EXCITING YEAR BECAUSE THEY WILL HAVE 3G DEPLOYED ... PUTTING THEM JUST UP TO PAR WITH EV-DO

That is yet to see... By that time, REV A should be out for EV-DO

Not even a month ago new HSDPA handsets were tested and successfully sustained speeds of 7.3 mbps on current HSDPA equipment.
I'll dig up the news release on it if you would like...
...
Care to show me what real customers are getting? Phoenix was one of the first UMTS markets for AT&T and I have used UMTS cards in my laptop and I have never gotten more than a 400k connection. My Treo on the other hands, averages about 800k.
Testing is one thing, real life implementation is something entirely different.
...
UMTS is indeed a 400-700 kbps connection with bursts over 1 mbps.
However, that has nothing to do with the capapility Cingular's network will have in the near future, without changing anything!
Think logically. You have a UMTS data card, not an HSDPA capable one. HSDPA is the faster technology (upgrade) to the two, but is currently what Cingular has and is currently deploying. Cingular has begun selling HSDPA data cards. Initially they supported sustained speeds of 1.8 mbps. Then, the cap was raised and they began offering speeds of 3.6 mbps. Again, this was done without making a single change to the HSDPA network that they already have.
The point is, HSDPA is definitely capable of these extremely higher speeds...it's...

Cingular/ATTWS has been touting this for what, 2-3 years now? Just out of curiosity when is it actually going to happen?
Sprint and VZW in that time have covered 70% of their markets with high-speed data and they are getting ready to upgrade. Cingular seems like they can't do 25% of their network.
Where exactly are these "billions" in network upgrades going?
...
???? not sure where your info is, cingular has the largest network, and it uses edge, you compare sprint to cingular? no comparison, sprint is fine if your a transit going along the highways, and don't even let me get started on verizon, ****ty ass coverage,
...
phoneguy have you seen Cingular's coverage map and compared it to Verizons??? Verizon's coverage is more extensive IMO.. What about EDGE (2G)????... it doesnt even compare to EV-DO (3G)!!!
...
yeah but you cant really trust those maps. they always put in the roaming areas and other crap
...
Even if Verizon has more coverage and what not on paper, it doesn't exist. That small fine print that says "Network coverage may vary from map" is true for them. When I checked their coverage in W. Virginia before I went, they stated they had network in the places I was going to, whereas Cingular said they had none, even when I called Customer Service. When I actually went on the trip, my buddies with Verizon had signal at one hotel, and none for the rest of the trip. I have Cingular, and had signal the whole time, even if it was one bar (I was still able to make a clear call, but I think my phone might take credit ;) ) As for Verizon's coverage where I live, it doesn't even come close to Cingular. I've seen Verizon phones drop calls with fu...

Coverage varies dramatically from area to area... Cingular may work better in some markets and Verizon in others... As far as my area, I have full signal 90% of the time and have not dropped a call yet... Given I've only had the service for a few weeks but it is a lot better than my experience with Cingular and T-Mobile..... And regarding EDGE vs EV-DO, I've used both and EV-DO is much much much faster... It is like comparing dial-up to cable internet... IMO..
π
...
What about UMTS & HSDPA upgrades for cingular and T-Mobile?
...
well once Cingular rolls out 3G by end of year most markets will support UMTS/HSDPA and I presume the speeds would be up to par with EVDO.... However, once EV-DO revA is deployed I think that will put Verizon and Sprint ahead again in terms of data speeds...
...
Wrong. The HSDPA equipment that Cingular has and currently is deploying is capable of sustained speeds much much higher than that of even EVDO rev. A. Cingular has simply capped their speeds, initially at 1.8 mbps and now have raised it to 3.6 mbps. The reason being because their wasn't any equipment being offered that supported those higher speeds.
Much like EDGE has different classes, HSDPA has the same kind of thing. With each class of HSDPA the speed increases dramatically. HSDPA handsets were tested not even a month ago on HSDPA equipment and reached sustained speeds of 7.3 mbps. And we all know that theoretically HSDPA can reach speeds of 14.4 mbps without any tech upgrades.
So, I say that although Cingular is slow to laun...

Good for cingular to save so much money on their network choice b/c they certainly need heck of lot more for their retention program w/ their crappy voice service. π

I have yet to hear anything about T-Mobile's ambitions on a 3G network. Anyone with inside info?
...
I don't think I can travel anywhere without Cingular's coverage being on par or superior to Verizon's π If there happens to be a rural area that they haven't broken out the GSM at, I'll bring along my old T62u and use some analog network they haven't shut off π
...
dont let the map fool you most of that coverage is amps in the rural areas
...
I've had GSM carriers for the longest time and I just recently switched to Verizon Wireless.. everyday I love it more and more... V-Cast, VZ Navigator, High Speed browsing... and now its gonna be even faster! π

everyone has their cellular company. i will never go back to verizon, ive have cingular but going to sprint because i get an employee discount. but all in all i was happy with ATT lol
...
Cingular will never be good with data especially when they only have UMTS/HSDPA against Sprint or Verizon, but Cingular will do well with HSUPA and/or MIMO. I think people just have to be patient.
...
Are you kidding me, Nextel? You of all people know that HSDPA has the upper hand against any revision of EVDO that is out there.
HSDPA theoretically has the capability of reaching sustained speeds of 14.4 mbps. Every day that comes closer and closer to a reality.
In the beginning Cingular offered speeds of 1.8 mbps on their HSDPA network. Recnetly, the cap has risen to 3.6 mbps without a single thing changing as far as the HSDPA network goes. Just as EDGE has classes, HSDPA has the same. With each new class that handsets and data cards are released at, speeds will increase dramatically.
Not even a month ago new HSDPA handsets were tested and successfully sustained speeds of 7.3 mbps on current HSDPA equipment.

NOTICED HOW YOU SAID THEORETICALLY......

Absolutley nothing matters, until we have 3.6mbps aircards sticking out the side of our laptops, and mobile phones capable of video calling, until then, absolutley everything is just talk, talk, talk, and not do, do, do,
...
Yea, that is true also because even if there will be 14.4mb/s, which it wont be, there must be pc-cards to obtain those speeds and if they only have 3.6mb/s it wont go to 14.4mb/s. (obviously)

Notice how I also said real world tests have already sustained speeds half that fast. It won't be much longer until those "theoretical" speeds are a reality.
Not even a month ago new HSDPA handsets were tested and successfully sustained speeds of 7.3 mbps on current HSDPA equipment.

He doesnβt realize that HSDPA speeds that have been tested and mentioned are in controlled areas and are theoretical which doesnβt mean much. Wait till it gets live on the network, we wont see 14.4mbps and we probably wont even see 5mbps. I think people need to look at the future because HSDPA wont do well on its own, however, as mentioned before with HSUPA and/or MIMO things will be nice.

What's up with this it works very slow compared to Verizon & Sprints networks, all these loooooser networks are currnetly running @ 400-700kbps, each of them, the SAME looooser speed, ZERO competition to cable internet.

i dont think you know what you're talking...

+1.. Cable Internet and Wireless Date Service are not even on the same planet.
...
In some cases, I think convenience outweighs speed, aircards/laptops=everywhere, cable internet=home only,. . .so there is definetly the convenience to consider, I personally am just waiting til next year, when either 1.8mbps or preferably 3.6mbps HSDPA aircards are available from Cingular.

We all know that "if everything goes well" Cingular with HSPDA will be faster in 2 years. That's not to say Revision D won't be out at 25 mbps.. hell who thought 4 years ago we would have Fiber Optics to the house.. it would be cheaper than my cable internet and 3 times as fast! (15 mbps for $44.99 INSANE!)
But in reality..RIGHT NOW.. Verizon and even Sprint, for the next 2 years have Cingular beat hands down! This is not just my personal view, but also the view of PC MAG! Excerpt:
Overly optimistic marketing doesn't help Cingular's position. New networks are always spotty in their first few months. But Cingular's coverage map shows a perfect blanket of signal covering the entire Baltimore-Washington area, with no holes. They should t...
