Crap. I was really looking forward to seeing what the Nokia - Sanyo venture would bring. I guess the Nokia "branded" handsets might be OK - but it won't be the same. 😢 😢 😢

Considering I haven't seen very much good out of Pantech so far, I'm not expecting much from the new Nokia "branded" devices.

I'm confused... Ok.. so.. Nokia is going to stop making CDMA phones, but they're going to use Pantech's phones and put their logo on them for the US market?

Please somebody correct me if I'm wrong? I just don't see why a company would put their logo on stuff that's not even theirs by design and such... unless Pantech and Nokia are working together on CDMA phones? 😕

That's all Audiovox ever did - they never actually made a phone themselves. Before they were bought out by UTStarcomm their phones were made by many different manufacturers. I hope the Pantech Nokia phones are decent - the 6305 seems OK, but without Bluetooth or a memory card slot it is really missing out. Supposedly there is a phone similar to it coming out that will add those features, but it just isn't a Nokia. I wonder if all of this is because Nokia and Qualcomm just don't get along?

One of the big reasons Nokia is pulling out is due to the US market being dominated by Qualcomm chip set providers and they make their own chipset and have been in fights/suits with Qualcomm ever since they developed that chipset. Another reason is the design quite frankly has been awful. Another reason is bigger carriers like Verizon and others want their own user interface built into the handsets, and Nokia will not compromise the "nokia experience" on a handset, so you have heads butting their too. It is not a surprise to me at ALL that the "NOYO" talks are ending, as this was a last ditch effort to save a failing business. What I do not get is how well Nokia does in other parts of the world in CDMA like India and other parts of Asia,...

All that means is that they're going to concentrate on GSM/UMTS phones. Hopefully it will bring some better GSM handsets out

ARGH!
Now my choice of cdma phones becomes even MORE limited. I'd give my left arm for a toshiba or sonyericsson or nokia cdma EVDO phone launched here. Screw gsm IMHO, cingular cant get their crap working properly and artificially limits their phones from making TCP connections, nor is tmobile anywhere near as good coverage wise. I cant even get their signal inside my house. I could care less what each company wants to do GSM wise, but i know for my needs here in Denver, GSM will never suffice for what I need to do. Looks like LG is the last phone company i'll ever buy a phone from again.
What irks me, is that nokia has had in my own personal experience the BEST call quality, stability and reception on verizon's cdma network. And now no...

Nokia currently has a higher end VzW phone... the 6256i. You can't get it off the verizon website but my store sells it. It's a flip w/ a .3 Megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Memory card spot, FM Radio... Just no VCast.

It is also the only phone to date that Verizon has allowed open bluetooth transfer on... Not to mention it's a Nokia Nokia... None of this Pantech Nokia crap.

I don't know why no one else sells this phone... it FLIES off our shelves.

A high end Nokia, are you kidding - doesn't matter what it looks like - you could get reception on Mars w/ this phone!

Yup. Nokia's sell. But in this particular case, everyone is to blame here. Companies like Qualcomm being greedy as usual. You have Verizon's arrogance wanting to put their lame a$$ UI on every phone. Then Nokia goes puts out the ugliest phone on the planet for the CDMA market.

If Nokia simply had better cooperation with Qualcomm and designed better handsets like they do for GSM in Europe, they would have had a big edge here with CDMA. I mean didn't Nokia announce a Series 60 phone last year for CDMA called the 6638??? Supposedly it was going to have EVDO too! What happened???

This is very bad news. Now CDMA is left with crap from the likes of SamSUCK, Panjunk, UTStarcum, Kyocrap, etc. ☹️ All garbage. At least the Samsucks are pretty bu...

LG isn't so bad?

LG has history of releasing handsets with subpar Reception, sub par software, bugs in the software, as well as hardware issues.

535s slides breaking off, the new 5500 has major problems with it's earpiece as well as displys (broken). The 225 has problems just shutting off, the phone restarts all the time. The LG 8100 was a bug fest with a fluctuating earpiece, restarts, white screen, etc.

I realize you have a bias against Samsung, but LG is by no means superior when it comes to issues in handsets. Perhaps that is why LGs handset margins are at less than 1% while Samsung's and Motorola's are at 10-15%.

Oh well.

The problem is the 6256i is a cheap piece of garbage partially designed by BenQ, which is why it feels like a toy, has a terrible earpiece, and a UI that is slow.

You mean besides this being one of the ugliest phones ever. Let me first off say that I like the phone besides its ugliness, but the flip is way to cheap and it locks up all the time and just does crazy stuff.

I think this is one of the worst business decisions that Nokia could ever make in their history because this will hurt them long term if they don’t decide to enter into the CDMA market. Perhaps they decided to “pull out” of the joint venture because they are having problems with Qualcomm with the license in question, and they decided to focus just on GSM, however, that is a horrible idea because why would you just want to target one technology when you can target the other one. Granted GSM has the majority of users globally at 70% market share of the 2 Billion cell phone users while CDMA only has 30% market share but why not target both? It is such a no brainier and this will just hurt them and no one else- shame on Nokia for this stupidity...

shame on Nokia for this stupidity and I thought I was going to start respecting them because they started to make more and better phones, but after this, my feelings have changed.

Hold the press. They'll go down in flames now that they don't have your support. 🙄
