I'm actually surprised that Atlanta WASN't part of the original batch of cities that Cingular launched 3G services in the beginning, considering it's Cingular's headquarters

Cingular had 3G in Atlanta in early 2004 as their first test market for HSDPA. Due to the fact that it was the first market, by the time they got through with the acquisition of AT&T and on track with launching an HSDPA network...the equipment Atlanta was running on was already old and outdated.

So, they took the network offline and upgraded the towers. It has actually been up and running for a good while now. This is just the first the new HSDPA equipment has been available to consumers there.

Do you work for Cingular? You seem to be very, very knowledgable, if you do work for Cingular, tell them they need to get they're act together, and offer 3.6mbps aircards the SAME EXACT TIME EVIL Verizon does!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deliver the future, or die! ! ! ! ! !

No, I do not work for Cingular. However, if I did, trust that I would be one pushing for a swifter deployment of HSDPA. I too agree that Cingular should be able to offer a competitive 3G offering nationwide, just as Verizon and Sprint are doing as we speak. Hopefully in the upcoming months, deployment will go according to, or better than planned.

But for now, we can only wait.

My timeline is April 07, I want to see the full deployment of DVB-H, and see what Cingular does and so on, but I can definetly picture myself coming back to Cingular @ the end of the decade, when there is TRUE broadband wireless internet, video phone services, but for now, until April 07, no contract for Cingular.

I would say by then, they should be well on their way to being ahead, and staying ahead of Verizon and Sprint as far as broadband wireless goes.

HSDPA is going to be around for awhile, and Sprint and Verizon are going to find themselves constantly upgrading their EVDO networks to match the capabilities of Cingular's HSDPA speeds. As far as DVB-H goes though, I'm not sure of when or what plans Cingular has to release that. It could be a long wait.

With reguards to DVB-H, I know the network already exists here in Las Vegas, because during CES, it was displayed, everything I've heard about DVB-H is early 07. That'll free up bandwidth for video telephony. And then, the future, will be here, we can call each other Jetson's nicknames, lol

As well as where I am. Crown Castle set up the first DVB-H system with the help of Nokia right here in Pittsburgh. Since then, Crown Castle and Nokia have made plans to launch in NYC later this year and have more than 30 additional metro areas launched by the early next year. Supposedly they will begin service with about 10 video and at least 24 audio channels. The service itself will be rather inexpensive at around $10.

Let's just hope they remain on track with their schedule.
