"couple of bucks" plus your VoIP service?

The UMA service is simply the actual 'switch' from cellular to Wifi, right? you'd still have to pay Vonage, or Skype, or whoever, right?

if this is supposed to fix tmo's coverage issues, it's more of a band-aid to the surgery it needs. it's innovative that they are offering the service, but it seems like a better way of conserving anytime minutes and side-stepping ma bell than fixing coverage issues

T-mobile is a great company. They have outstanding customer service, improved selection of handsets, they are spending millions on improving coverage, nicely priced plans, worldwide, and a great company image. The service is exceptionally good here in Washington state.

"Philips was careful not discuss their carrier partner for the T709, but the phone has been shown with T-bobile branding and appears to be an exclusive for the carrier."

I wouldn't think so. T-Mo is going to be running there own servers on this using Kineto's UMA solution.

what this means is that if you are in a Wi-Fi zone then you will have service and unlimited data (b/c it doesn't cost the company money). This is very innovative, because it means you won't use minutes, you won't lose reception, and you can surf the internet from your phone/pda for an unlimited amount if you have a Wi-Fi signal. Great if you have a Wi-Fi router at home or school.

sorry, forgot to mention.....you won't need a voip service in conjunction with this....it is voip.....all you need is a Wi-Fi connection to what most likely will need to be a broadband source.

Really? Thats sweet! I was worried I would have to get a VOIP provider and a cell provider to make it work right. I prefer not hvaing a landline of any kind, whether that be VOIP or POTS

No, you would not have to use vonage or packet8 (packet 8 is much better quality) at all. You would just need to have a internet connections.

No, you wouldn't have to pay a VoIP provider. T-Mobile is essentially providing that.

You need an Internet connection - you would have to pay for that, but that's it.

OK, this sounds almost too good to be true...like what would the actual voice quality be, etc. Please give me opinions; could this/should this push me over to switching to T-Mo from BohemethVerizon. Bit annoyed with Verizon's charges/prices/Reagan-era phones....Tell me what you think?!

Well i use vonage right now for my home phone service and i think it's great! unlimited nationwide mins for $30/month! you get voicemail, caller id, call waiting, three way, call forwarding! The quality on it is great too! Crystal clear calls everytime.

Watch for it this year under the brand "T-Mobile @ home." I hear that they are partnering with Comcast for the VoIP service. Although the article mentioned the T-709, the new SDA and MDA should work with it as well. We'll see.
