Only reason Cingular is ahead of T-Mobile is because of them merging with AT&T wireless. Other than that, it would be straight competition. Cingular is nothing without AT&T wireless customers. I hope T-Mobile as a whole buys Cingular. Oh, and don't say it can't happen, cause we already see how Sprint gobbled up Nextel, eventhough they are totally seperate companies in term of networks, and how Cingular felt they had no choice but to merge with AT&T to beat T-Mobile. Cingular is still garbage.

I'm not sure the FCC would allow Deutsche to buy Cingular...or even if they could. And Cingular isn't garbage...they just aren't up to par with Tmobile. Expect Tmobile to come out swinging in this...

Cingular is better than Tmobile in phones, coverage, and service.
Tmobile provides better customer service.
You could say that Tmobile has better plans but they only have slightly more than half of Cingular's coverage.

I hope Tmobile does well in the auction. It would give them much better coverage if they were able to obtain some key markets. I'm just not sure that Tmobile will be the only major player trying to get that spectrum. I'm looking for Spint/Nextel to make a move on that and for some reason, my gut is telling me Cingular wants in on it too.

Cingular has no need for the 3G spectrum because they're at the spectrum cap in most markets and are deploying 3G on the existing 850 and 1900 bands.

Sprint-Nextel has no need for the spectrum either because they're near the spectrum cap in most markets also, and they have plenty of disposable 2500 mhz spectrum to deploy new services in.

These auctions are where some of the more successful regional carriers buy spectrum and become national carriers.
Dobson, US Cellular and Alltel come to mind.

I expect Verizon and T-Mobile to open their checking accounts and really bid high. Both are at a spectrum disadvantage to Sprint and Cingular. After these auctions the spectrum playing field should be even.

It varies by region, but in most places, both Cingular and Sprint Nextel have more spectrum than they need. The FCC regulates these things closely, and won't let any one company hoard spectrum they don't plan on using. Therefore it's possible Cingular and Sprint Nextel would actually be barred from buying in many markets.

Compare that with T-Mobile, which desperately needs this spectrum to compete. Certainly it's worth much more to them, so I expect them to be big winners.

How long is the auction? Is the amount that DT is giving T-Mobile USA to bid enough for them to win?

if anyone else cant bid then yes. but i think if voda sells their shares in time and goes to the auction then t-mobile is outta luck.

Don't bet on that. Deutsche knows Tmobile USA needs this spectrum to stay competitive in the future.

i hope that happens 😁

i'd hate to see t-mobile go under but i'd like to see a euro threat come and show us how its done. 😎

They wont go under, but they will face a lot of challenges in the future if they dont win any of the 1,000+ licenses that will be up for auction. i am sure the FCC will bring some more 3g spectrum, but no one knows when that will be so it is essential for T-mobile USA to prevail in this auction.

Actually, Tmobile consistently ranks higher in network quality in several regions. Sorry.

And what is your basis for saying that?

Is it because Cingular buys the exclusive rights to all of the good phones? 🤣 Don't be bitter.

No, on a serious note though, why do you say Cingular is garbage? It's far from garbage from all my experiences across the wireless companies.

Sorry to hear it. They've definitely raised the bar in my market, even higher than it already was. I honestly cannot say that I've been disappointed with Cingular once in all my travels.

I do think their slogan is tacky though.

I would think they may buy some just to barter with T-Mobile out of its 1900MHz bandwidth.

Building on 2100 would be good move from a device standpoint, most of the true 3g devices coming out of the EU and Asia are 3g on 2100.

That move would open up several avenue's for imate to move more into the us with 3g devices.

It's not the same "2100 band".

Part of it is, but it's 2100 paired with 1700, instead of 2100 paired with 1900 like Europe.

So we should start seeing Quad-band phones with 1700MHz/2100MHz phones on T-Mobile once they win? I wonder how will they put those bands on the phones.
...
Rich Brome

Feb 1, 2006, 11:04 PM
No, it's a paired band. 1700+2100 is essentially one "band", not two. One is for sending, and the other is receive.

The 850 and 1900 bands are paired the same way, the send and receive bands are just closer.
