Smart move on Verizon's part, but will Vodafone give in?

This is a very good move by Verizon to try to get 100 percent ownership of one of the best, most profitable, high flying wireless carriers in their hands and get rid of Vodafone, however, I don’t think Vodafone will be tempted that easily because of that same premise. On one hand, Vodafone will probably get $20+ billion for their stake in VZW, which they can help increase their properties worldwide or even go after another United States company or pay down some debt. They also won’t get any more income or say in Verizon wireless. On the other hand, if they continue to hold their stake, Vodafone will keep getting a big say and revenue in this great Verizon wireless company.

It is a tough decision.

What does everyone else think?

I think that vodafone should sell their verizon stake and become a major player with tmobile and expand their coverage and highspeed service and make them a big profitable company in 10-20 yrs

Very interesting suggesting about T-Mobile USA however, did you forget that DT owns T-mobile USA?

The regulators will never allow DT and Vodafone to own T-mobile USA.

There have already been rumblings that vodafone wanted out of verizon for a while now. They had a decent 4th quarter, but not what they were expecting. This would be a good opportunity for them to sell of their shares and out the extra cash where it's needed.

apparently you have to do more than just break records in adds.

Hell. Even Nextel18 thinks it was a good quarter. That's when you know you've won.

maybe vodafon should take over and convert verizon to an international GSM carrier and play a key role in the US market. the possibility is here, the market is here, the money is here, the action is missing.

the possibility and money are not here......

it would cost a fortune (more than building a new GSM carrier) to convert all of Verizon's towers, phones, and technology to GSM. It is not a possibility at all. Verizon and modern GSM companies might one day select the same technology on a future generation, but Verizon will never be GSM.

To convert a carrier from CDMA to GSM could be likely however, it is very very expensive and even though Vodafone and Verizon both have plenty of money and capital it would be in their best interest to leave Verizon wireless as a CDMA player and do some kind of CDMA/GSM type device to work domestically and internationally.

Verizon wireless had a decent quarter? they got 2 million subscribers and 1.8 million were direct net adds which many carriers in this industry can not even get. In my view, Verizon wireless will be the best carrier in 2006 and 2007 and with their capital and business plan I think it can take them to new areas.

OK, I missread the article.... its wasnt disappointing 4th quarter, quite the opposite. It was disappointing growth in europe and Japan.... sorry my mistake. Here's the article.

Very interesting premise that you have stated, however, I wouldn’t agree with you that Vodafone would actually start their own network because it is cheaper and better to buy one that is already in the marketplace whether they are big boys or a little guy.
