very interesting
I actually like this stuff because it is interesting for more kinds of technologies to come here domestically. Obviously, coverage in doors and in some areas are sub-par so perhaps they can team up with the cellular companies to improve on those problems. To invest billions of dollars to try to go into this USA market I think is a bad idea especially when the penetration rate is so high at 75%. Seems to be interesting..

I think this is the next step for cell phones and will be the standard in 10-15 years max. A combination of satelite/cell technology..satelite when unable to achieve cell signal, cellular the rest of the time. True global phones.

I agree, because coverage in this country needs to drastically improve, but is it wise to already invest heavily in a 75% saturated market?

Wouldn't this also be a possibility - With a satellite connection, you could theoretically go anywhere in the world and use the number that you currently have, no matter where you are. Just a thought.

also very true, but i think these guys (as well as the whole boeing situation) basically want to do USA service and not really thinking about internationall service, unless i am missing something.

Yeah pricing may be an issue. Who knows til we see it though. Maybe we'll get lucky and it'll work everywhere and it won't cost anymore than average. But then again, I guess this isn't a perfect world either. Ces La Vie.

well pricing may not be an issue.. i mean xmsr and siri are using satelites also and it only costs $15 for each service.. i mean its obviously differnt technologies and differnt content and services but it could be that cheap? the problem is siri and xmsr are losing tons of money.. not sure if the new satelite cell phone companies want to do that.

Also keep into mind that Satellite radio is just broadcasting data one-way. It isn't relaying data back and forth.

No. Satellite does not equal global coverage.
Most satellites for this type of service are geostationary, meaning it's just one satellite (or a handful) that stay in orbit above a fixed point above the equator. If they were as far away as the moon, they might cover almost half the planet (but not quite). Of course human-made satellites are much closer than the moon, so they only cover a circular area under them.
The exception is/was Iridium, the only satellite phone service to provide true global coverage, even at the poles and in the middle of the ocean. To do tha...
