Reason for WMA requirement for Vcast Music

The reason VZW went with WMA is actually due to the digital copyright protection technology that WMA offers.
This is the reson that the music industry is so onboard with VZW's new service.

The only people that lose are the CHUCKLEHEADS who refuse to purchase anything legitimately and chose to pirate their entertainment.

VZW's new service blows every other service provider's offering out of the water from the word go. The music industry is so onboard with this service that at launch it will offer more songs than any other service has at the time of launch.

VZW's is the only product that gives the consumer the freedom to chose to download right from the handset or to go home to the PC and download it to the PC. The reason that the ...

Wow.. that sounded almost like a press release. 😳

And it isn't even true. AAC format would've given Verizon DRM (digital rights managemnt).. its not like its a WMA-only thing, lol.

"The music industry is SO onboard with it"? Sure, they're onboard with anything that could potentially make them money. They're onboard with iTunes too, and in an even bigger way (2 million legal tracks available on iTunes, compared to half a million on VCast), and iTunes DOESN'T use WMA at ALL.

'Only music stealers have anything to lose?' Tell me another one. How about folks who already have a big collection of mp3 or AAC files, and don't want to have them auto-translated to WMA and lose audio quality? Or who just don't like the $1.99 OTA price of V...

AAC is primarily used by Apple, they chose to go with CINGULAR. That's why VZW went with WMA. At the time that i tunes launched they didn't have all those LEGAL tracks. They didn't even have the half million that VZW is going to offer LEGALLY.

As far as AUDIO quality, there isn't a PHONE out tht has HI QUALITY speakers from bose, HARMON KHARDON or anyone like that. IT"s a PHONE. AND even if there WAS a phone with HIGH end speakers built into it CHEAPSKATES would complain about the price of the PHONE! LOL!!! 🤣 And if you don't want to lose the AUDIO quality of the file, you duplicat your original file and convert only 1 to the WMA to use it with the new service.... OH the trauma of extra effort!!!

The $1.99 gives you 2 copies, d...

Yeah.. compared to how many VCast-capable phones available now? Two, you say? With a third (LG 9800, updated) coming?

Yeah, thats a big difference. 🙂

Actually, Apple only went with Cingular (and Motorola) initially. They have made noises on bringing iTunes to the broader market.

Doesn't matter what iTunes had at launch... the music industry as a whole is much more 'onboard' now with the concept of offering its catalog online, over the air, whatever. So you'd think VCast could do better than having one-quarter of iTunes catalog.

Far as audio quality goes... ever hear of high-quality HEADPHONES? Y'know, stuff like Shure e3Cs, Etymotics, etc.? They work real good, an' don't add to the cost of the phone at all. Luv 'em with my iPod.

And there's no way to avoid losing quality with VCast music with my existing music... the simple act of converting my existing mp3s and AACs will cause a...

2 by samsung,
2 by lg

7 to start with for the vcast service itself.

for VCAST music there will be 3 to start that are able to use that service. the 9800 update later in the year will add to the 3 starter models.

Obviously not all of those are out yet. The same could be said for Amp'ds lineup of phones.

So the point is?

Shock, all of those V-Cast phones ARE out already. It's just that all of them do not have the capability of Music on Demand.

That's not what I was led to believe by the articles:

The first compatible phone will be an upgraded LG VX8100;
additional VCAST music phones from Samsung and UT Starcom will be available soon, most likely the A930 and 8945. Customers with a LG VX8100 and Samsung A950 will be able to upgrade their handsets for compatibility with this service.

Read my post again. They are not all capable of Music Downloads....but, there are MANY V-Cast phones available.

Yeah, I get the distinction. But for the purposes at hand, we're counting phones that are actually OUT, AND can do VCast MUSIC NOW.

An' by that count, there's only two.

wait till 16th...

you're so impatient!

It's gonna be 3 phones on 16th. 4-5 by the end of the first quarter.

I would imagine, that all the VCast phones eventually will get the VCast music software.

Have you seen the pics of 8945?

DRM may be true, but there's no reason why they could not have added WMA to the existing setup. I don't play a single downloaded song on my ipod....ALL are ripped from by existing collection. BUT I still have the option to go to itunes and buy something and put it on my pod without sacrificing the existing library of legally ripped songs. I truly think that's the issue that has everyone so p***ed. ADD the download capability without REMOVING the existing capability.
