I have heard that it's both. M$ and VZW. Last I knew, there was a way to get MP3 functionality back. BUT that may NO LONGER be the case. Everyplace I see posts about this - ie www.howardforums.com, www.phonearena.com, www.mibiledia.com and www.wirelessadvisor.com- I take the information with a grain of salt. Until I see CONFIRMED information on this I WILL NOT be updating to the latest version of the firmware.

How can all these sites, which are "expertly" run, have NO concrete information, let alone having four days to test this? I smell $$$...

Expertly run? Nah. They are just users posting their findings for the most part.
I'd like to be able to keep MP3 capabilities as well as add .wma or whatever it's going to be called. I don't use my phone as an MP3 player. But if I do, I'd like it to do as advertized. This, IMO, may lead to another suit.

As to the testing, this has been in the tyest phase for quite some time. 4 plus weeks as far as I can tell.

we confirmed our findings with an upgraded phone. we would not have posted the information otherwise. the only reason we cannot test whether the windows media desktop will allow you to install mp3s or if they are transcoded to wma is because we are mac users.

the other sites you mention often (or only) post information directly from users, but that doesn't mean those users don't know what they are talking about. it just means we've all done limited testing but have found these changes significant.

It would be nice if they had a SEPERATE upgrade for the 8100 that would solve the camera lag problem. Can never take an un-grainy picture because it takes so dang long to actually TAKE the picture.

The old VGA camera on my VX7000 was a lot better than this 1.3 MEGApixel one the way it is right now.

But nooo they have to bundle that with the MP3 killer 🙂

I was with the Itunes when people made đŸ˜ŗ and said "I have to PAY for the music? đŸ‘ŋ
I'd rather use my Kazaa/eDonkey" etc

You watch, in a month you'll be like: "I should try it out, just for this one song I like..." 😁

I think you're in fo' a rude suprise, KV. ☚ī¸

iTunes had the advantage of its competition at launch time being mostly P2P pirates. The music companies sued the crap out of 'em, spammed 'em up with lots of phony tracks, shut down the original Napster, an' generally made themselves a royal pain in the ass. Plus there was the fact that a lot of people were (suprisingly) honest an' actually DID want to pay for music.

None of that translates to VCast Music. It has a ver...

Well, ampd is new, let's see if this proce gonna last...

Or, how successful they are gonna be at all 😛

How many FIAA lawsuits were there? 3500? How many people were (of still is) dowloading music? Like 3000000000? I'm making these numbers up, but you get the idea. 🙂

To my knowledge, amped gives you 1 version of the song (low fidelity) for the cellphone. (I've heard ~60kbps). It's no good for my computer, where I have highend speakers and sound card. Verizon gives 2 versions, one for the cell, and one for your computer (160kbps).

Now, does it make more sence to you?

I'm not willing to FUD Amp'd jus' yet, KV. And since they're on Verizon's network, I'd think you'd want them to succeed. After all, VZW is making money off'a them.

You know as well as I that the lawsuits had an impact all out of proportion with how many people actually got busted. For every person who got sued, thousands of others heard about it and decided that stealing music might not be worth ...

It's funny, the AMPD rep I was talking to couldn't give me a straight answer on the bitrate. He said the songs are gonna be 1-2 MBs. That's why it's only .99 😁

Oh, I thought you're talking about 2 songs from Verizon. You could've specified... 😎

No I don't have a straight answer on AMPD's songs bitrate, but, as I mention before, even AMPD rep couldn't tell me 😕 . Here's a part of my conversation with him las night:

01/10/2006 11:37:20PM Message Sent CSR "yes, the
bitrate varies... also the songs we send are wma format"
01/10/2006 11:37:43PM Message Sent CSR "you can
put mp3's onto the phone from your computer at any bitrate you want"
01/10/2006 11:38:26PM Message Sent CUS "i
understand... but i have an audigy2 with a Cambridge Sound system, and i was
wondering if it was owrth to download the song OTA"

Thanks KV.

Assumin' that the rep really does have all this stuff down stone cold (a big 'if', considering Amp'd is a new cellphone company, just launched), I DO like the fact that Amp'd is allowing people to put mp3s on their phones.

Kinda makes me wonder why Verizon can't do it, if little ol' Amp'd can. ☚ī¸

On Amp'ds phones? I'd assume so... both mp3 and WMA are listed as supported audio formats on all of their phones so far.

Of course, you'd still take the quality hit for converting mp3 to WMA.

There's absolutely nothing in that link about the bitrate for Amp'ds songs. Wanna try again? ☚ī¸
