Re: LG...
As a network tech for a cellular company by the very definition of the network specification the EDGE network got around 60kbps to 80kbps average speeds. The UPGRADED edge network hits 140kbps to 160bps
The 1xRTT network on VZW ranges 80kbps to 200kbps averae speeds are usually in the 160kbps
THAT'S 1xRTT... the OLD data network
EVDO rev0 averages 300kbps to 600bps (i happen to be posting this with my e815 tethered to a laptop getting around 560kbps. That's a phone from oh almost 3 years old and kicking the crap out of your precious iphone!
With my e815 i managed to reduce a brand new iphone user to a babbling idiot in under minutes. And the only think he could out performs me on ws the voicemail, the wifi (not even at&t's network) and the ui.
I will admit the apple ui is NICE and apple does a damn good job of UI development. But i'm one of those guys who wants performance and i'm willing to sacrifice appearance to get it.
The evdo RevA network can peak around 2 Mbps! that's low end DSL speeds.
By the network's specifications alone you just called yourself a liar. Your friend MAY have been in poor signal area and likely wan't even on EVDO to begin with since EV is rarely out in the sticks where you and your Edge belong.
Now bear in mind that yes WiFi can hit 54Mbps and higher depending on your wifi router. this is ONLY for the RF connection. that speed is then limited by the speed of the back end network attached to the router. So if you are surfing wifi on your crapple iphone with a wifi router connected to a 2 or 3 mbps dsl line, and i am surfing using a Rev A device getting 1.5 to 2mbps i'm not all that much slower than you.
Now consider that typical web browsing doesn't utilize your entire bandwidth. Further more it is limited by the destination servers upstream bandwidth and the number of consecutive users they are serving off that bandwidth. Upstream is usually much lower than downstream. Most AVERAGE users would see very little NOTICABLE differenece between an iphone on wifi and a rev a connection. Yeah if you're a geek running speed tests all day then you're gonna see a difference. but a normal person won't care.
It's not like these phones are gonna be running MMORPG's and other high bandwidth intensive applications.
By the way i have played with the voyager and it is bloody sweet!!! I already know what my next phone will be if it comes out at a reasonable price.
