A New Entrant In Wifi-First Wireless Service

When I saw that Cablevision was entering the mobile market with a wifi-first offer, and quickly looked over the service offering, I was impressed. Reading further, I became less so. Looks like this will launch in NYC area only, and there's just one Motorola handset available at launch. We'll need to wait and see what this evolves into over time.

My main question is why would anyone consider this ultra expensive service in a market flooded with much cheaper alternatives? $30/month? $10/month? People can pay a cheaper yearly fee of for magicjack or nettalk then use an app on all their smart devices that has an app to make and receive calls for a much lower price. Google hangouts, skype, etc are all cheaper options that may be able to be used on all their existing devices. Google voice plugin for gmail is free, granted a computer or tablet is much heavier than a phone, but for those who already own and carry one, it's a cheaper monthly option. I assume a city the size of NYC is flooded with free wifi hotspots almost everywhere a person turns, why pay for the cow when the milk is ...

The thing is unless you are inside, those other free hotspot options don't usually mean much. Optimum has coverage throughout the area, especially if you add in the "CableWiFi" partnership between big cable companies. That will be important since TW is the much bigger NYC provider than Cablevision, who are bigger in the suburbs.

The real problem is that despite being widespread, the Optimum Wi-Fi doesn't always work that well. Even with a strong signal, I'll often have to turn off my phone's WiFi to get back on LTE. I'm assuming it's because Optimum is very congested.
