The Garnet OS hasn't been updated in years. And even a few years ago, it was dated when it was released.
The most important thing a new OS would bring to Palm is a multi-threading ability, or the ability to run multiple processes. Your PC does it, most other brands of Smartphones do it, but Garnet does not.
While you may argue back that your Treo can run more than one program at a time, actually it doesn't - it just does them sequentially. A seemingly small difference, but it is holding back the Palm functionality.
Furthermore, the graphics are weak by 2007 standards, the instruction set is limited to things that were present 3 years ago, and all of this manifests itself with fewer bundled in functionalities: GPS, Wi-Fi, BT.
It's hard to explain why anyone would want a Dual-Core Intel processor over a Pentium, but the bottom line is, if you're buying a new product, it's kind of nice for it to be modern. Palm has missed the boat and not improved its OS to an embarrassing degree.
The Centro may be a good Palm product for attracting the new/lower-end customer of the smartphone market, but God knows Palm screwed up their position as the leader of the pack. Advanced users like those on Phonescoop will certainly be frustrated.
