am i the only one that thinks this is the dumbest thing palm could release besides the Foleo..? what are existing treo users suppose to use..? they've created a cheaper uglier version of the once prestigious treo 700p 755 was a disappointment same os just antenna missing and a mini sd..now..it all gone to hell...Im leaving Palm and moving into the HTC Touch who's with me!

I been moved on from the Treo! I totally agree with you! They are not producing anything diffrent just body styles! I mean cmon! NO flash NO wifi always changing the memory card slot forcing those, who don't buy the micro with the adapters, to buy another card and transfer the data over. Not to mention the fact that they still have the same megapixel camera that they have had on the phone since the treo 700p AND no stereo bluetooth! Get with the times Palm! No GPS for turn by turn directions (unless you buy an extra $100 piece). This is ridiculous and THATS why I made the switch to the HTC Mogul and I love it!

If this had shipped with a new OS, then no, it wouldn't have been a waste of time. But as is, its just a 755p in a new case.

I think this is good for palm to release a more affordable version that isnt a TREO for people who want an internet phone that has a full keyboard so the OS isnt important with this phone but COME ON PALM give us a NEW treo! They might go under if they keep this up

Who's to say they aren't going to announce one in a few weeks? This thing really just popped out of nowhere. Gosh, do you people really think Palm's not doing anything? There's a lot of demad for their next big thing, and they need to make sure it's perfect when they bring it to market.

They brought the Centro out now, to help attract new customers and get some people with itchy tech fingers by until the new one arrives.

What do you want them to do?

They added Google Maps, changed up Contacts to work with Google Maps, made it slimmer, removed an antenna, added an IM thing (I think), and that's just what I remember, since I've never owned one.

Do you honestly expect Palm to release the best thing they could come up with, and then leave it at that? They hold back things, to use on future devices. If they put everything in now, why would anyone want to purchase the new one? All companies do this with items that are "upgraded" rather frequently.

Well I actually owned one and they really didn't make it slimmer they just took the antenna off and it was like two ounces lighter so don't be fooled also the whole google maps thing wasn't really an upgrade because I had that on my 700p that came out BEFORE the 755p and everyone I knew that had a 700p had it too so don't let them fool you again by acting like thats an advancement because it wasn't, now the whole IM thing was a new feature but cmon that was all that was new as far as features go. So lets talk about how every Palm device they have come out with since the 700p has been the same. Same camera, same OS, same bluetooth capabilities, same programs fro the most part so on and so forth so don't tell me anything about the Palm device ...

Does Motorola release a totally new OS and hardware change every time they release a phone? How about HTC or Nokia?

Gosh, give it time. I'm sure they know what they're doing. Development of electronics, especially in the cell phone segment, takes a lot of time. They have to revamp their current models with minor improvements to continue an income stream.

Remember, these are corporations. They have to make smart business decisions. If they mess up, they can't just raise taxes like the government.

Im pretty sure that PALM will release a new TREO. I agree with Zombie9...this is a great affordable version for people like me that want a full keyboard internet and email. I could careless about wifi or bluetooth. I have had several phones with bluetooth and have NEVER used it.

Google maps wasnt really an addition..i have it on my 700p along with the maps..all they didw as take the antenna off..thats no improvement...and new customers..? they're trying 2 attract a youg crowd with this centro? its not even cosmetically attractive...the younger generation are more into the thin phase of things i.g. iphone razr 2 moto q who wants a old school looking treo..this phone will flop along with palm!

I disagree. Niece who has the 700p wants the smaller formfactor. My 13yr old wants one and so does the wife. Niece has had the 650 and the current version for years. She's always stated her and her friends (in med school) always complain about todays "smart pda phones" being TOO BIG. I'm sure for the lower level of user, this phone will be a sleeper. The ones that could care less if it wipes your butt, they just want it to function. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

And you're how old? 18? 17? 20? How do you know what the younger generation wants?

And it not being attractive is your opinion, not that of others. Apparently some people think it's a good thing, their stock rose 6% after the announcement. Remember, there are millions of others that don't sit around on forums hating Palm all day. Most of the "every day" consumers are going to like this.

I guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks who's correct.

See, that's the problem with todays cell phone users. They always want MORE, push the phone to the edge and when it can't handle the load and breaks, they cry and bitch all the way to the forums. Get real people. The phone was DESIGNED or MARKETED for you power users. It's intended for those who don't need a big clunker of a phone to do the job. The phone sets a new standard in size and the MORON who did the review needs to answer one nagging question. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT IMPROVED on the OS? He mentions twice that the OS was old and he was DISAPOINTED it wasn't updated. Ok, tells us.. what do you WANT in your OS. The phone works. Works well (I got to play with one too) and those who want something less bulky (700, 755's) will flock to ...

Dude,

The Garnet OS hasn't been updated in years. And even a few years ago, it was dated when it was released.

The most important thing a new OS would bring to Palm is a multi-threading ability, or the ability to run multiple processes. Your PC does it, most other brands of Smartphones do it, but Garnet does not.

While you may argue back that your Treo can run more than one program at a time, actually it doesn't - it just does them sequentially. A seemingly small difference, but it is holding back the Palm functionality.

Furthermore, the graphics are weak by 2007 standards, the instruction set is limited to things that were present 3 years ago, and all of this manifests itself with fewer bundled in functionalities: GPS, Wi-Fi, BT...

and...by attracting these new younger consumers..whats palm doing for their main clientele..? the business crowd and the elite phone/pda users? people that owned palm in the earlier years got palm because it was the most advanced. Now who wants to keep their then $700 priced treo 700p when there's a cheap uglier version of it at 99bucks??? treo might attract a new crowd but they will loose a bigger market...once loyal treo users.

I'm not an experienced pda/smart phone user like many of you on here, but this phone just might be what I'm looking for. It might be the thing that gets me to leave Verizon.
I understand that it doesn't have many things that it probably should have nowadays, and I understand why some people are slamming it. However, it seems to have everything that I would want, or need. I may just buy this thing.

I don't think this is a complete waste of time but Yes the OS is old and needs to be updated. The lack of true multi tasking is a big one. Can you listen to music while sending email or sending text messages?
I am a programmer and while Palm OS was brilliant at the time it is now pretty much out dated.
What features would I like to see? Well the big two are wifi and GPS.
I may still get it one because of the price and size but it could have been so much more. Maybe we will see an Treo 800 soon with those features.
