As some people on here have predicted (texaswireless, among others), and others have refuted very strongly (nextel1😎, this purchase of nextel is ending up to not be such a bargain after all. If my calculations are correct, this puts the total cost to sprint for this purchase to be over $15 billion dollars.

Sprint Nextel will buy affiliate for $6.5B

Sprint Nextel Corp. will buy wireless affiliate Nextel Partners Inc. for $28.50 a share, or $6.5 billion.

In a written release Tuesday, the companies said the $6.5 billion figure includes amounts payable upon conversion of debt securities and settlement of options.

The transaction implies an enterprise value for Nextel Partners of about $10 billion, the companies said. Sprint Nextel owns about a third of Nextel Partners.

The "put" price of $28.50 a share was determined after the two appraisers, Morgan Stanley and Lazard, issued their reports of fair market value for Nextel Partners. Morgan Stanley set that value at $9.6 billion, or $2...

Take a look at what the article actually says. "Shareholders will be paid approx 6.5 billion." But it also says that the purchase price will be the average between $9.6 billion and $8.8 billion, which comes out to $9.2 billion as a purchase price. That is clearly stated here at www.phonescoop.com.

And your short-sightedness is very apparent with your $10 billion statement. That is how much NEXTEL PARTNERS is worth. But, and if you read my original post you will see this, the TOTAL buyout of Nextel by Sprint is going to end up costing over $15 billion in CASH. That is based on the cost of all of the affiliates that Sprint had to purchase as well as Nextel Partners.

by the way, they dont pay in cash. the cash just means that they arent paying for nextel partners with their stock. (sprint's stock)

and yes, they are only paying $6.5 billion, not the $9.2 billion or whatever is mentioned elsewhere.

"the TOTAL buyout of Nextel by Sprint is going to end up costing over $15 billion in CASH."

again this isnt with cash.. it is with borrowing money.. the reason they say use cash, means that they arent buying it with stock.

Are you that thick-headed? Borrowed money becomes cash on the financial statements until it is paid out. Then it becomes debt - otherwise known as a liability account where cash will have to be paid out over a set period. They AR...

I'm not the one that has a problem understanding that. You are. Go re-read the thread. I am stating that you were WRONG when you said that this merger would cost less than $15 billion IN CASH!!!! Do the math. Use your numbers, except use the correct number for the Nextel Partners buyout ($9.2 billion). It adds up to 15.6 billion dollars.

https://www.phonescoop.com/news/discuss.php?fm=m&ff= ... »

Now, do the math and tell me I am wrong!!!!

But I'm sure you will find a way to slither your way out of this one too. 🤣

nextel18

Dec 21, 2005, 4:37 PM
anyway.. its not 15.6 billion. lol

nextel partners buyout was $6.5 billion.

our friend TX did the math for us, except with the error with the nextel partners buy out..

--------

ready, let us do math for you.

nextel partners= $6.5 billion

Enterprise Communication 0.1 Billion

Alamosa PCS 4.3 Billion

IWO Holdings 0.4 Billion

Gulf Coast 0.3 Billion

US Unwired 1.3 Billion

-----------

$12.9 billion.

that obviously doesnt include UPCS. as i mentioned UPCS will probably get $1B, which would make the total $13.9 billion.

yes, you need to do the math again.. again nextel partners was bought out for $6.5 billion not $9.2 billion.

anyway..

problem is, you dont know how to read or do math. i understand....

I am not the one with the problem reading....you are. The Nextel Partners buyout was not $6.5 billion. Learn how to calculate an average. Once you learn that, then come back and finish this argument because until you learn basic math this will go nowhere and we cannot have an intelligent debate.

That $41 billion was spent on tremendous assets that could be obtained no other way. Do you have any idea how impossible it would be to obtain the amount of spectrum that Cingular got out of that deal alone? And that's not including the infrastructure and customers they obtained. That merge was worth every penny.

that is true, but the cingular buyout of ATTWS was a horrible merger and it isnt worth the $41 billion that they spent.

atleast with sprint there will be synergies with the core (ie nextel and sprint around $10+ billion in synergies) plus the affiliates' synergies which hasnt been calculated yet. so far, cingular has been having a bad situation with the merger.

TX did it for us in this forum.

"Nextel Partners 9.2 Billion (this is incorrect it is $6.5 billion)

Enterprise Communication 0.1 Billion

Alamosa PCS 4.3 Billion

IWO Holdings 0.4 Billion

Gulf Coast 0.3 Billion

US Unwired 1.3 Billion"

next will be UPCS or Ubiquitel Inc.

so far without the Ubiquitel Inc or UPCS situation the total is $12.9 billion.

i think Ubiquitel Inc will bring around 1.1-1.3 billion.

so that would bring a total of= $14 billion.

I'm wrong??? Using your numbers (other than your glorious assumption that EVERY report on the web is wrong regarding the $9.2 billion buyout of Nextel Partners), I come up with the total purchase being $15.6 billion BEFORE Ubiquitel and UPCS being included.

Remember, Nextel, the selling price is calculated by taking the average of the two appraisals of Nextel Partners....

Forsyth, they already owned 32% of NXTP. TOTAL value of NXTP was averaged at $9.2 B. So, they only had to pay $6.2B.
Also, you implied you were referring to THIS purchase costing $15B. Yes, acquiring all of the PCS affiliates is starting to add up. But, they knew going into their deal w/NXTL that they were gonna have satisfy them (acquisition or renogotiate their agreements).
But, they still not up $15B.

I was stating that the total Nextel purchase including all affiliates was adding up to over 15 billion dollars. Not the Nextel Partners purchase. This goes back to a discussion that we had with nextel18 months ago where he stated that it would not end up costing $15 billion.

And the total purchase price of $9.2 billion for Nextel Partners is correct as you are forgetting to include debt and fees included in the purchase. The stock purchase was $6.5 billion, and then you have to add in debt, taxes, and other ancillary fees.
