Unwise?

It would be unwise for Cingular to launch or even unveil new handsets this late in the holiday shopping season

Why would it be so unwise? Since these are first-time launches, they should not take away from people buying PEBLs and RAZRs and PTT phones and stuff, they are two different markets. No?

Maybe, but they are new phones nonetheless. 3G phones would siphon attention away from the RAZR and PTT phones.

Not very much attention. Someone who wants the RAZR is going to come for the RAZR. The onyl thing this is going to siphon attention away from is VCAST. And that is a market we want to steal.

Someone looking for the latest and greatest phone isn't going to go snatch up a RAZR when there are handsets with streaming video and broadband-like internet access.

its all about quota. they wanna push the current phones now over the holiday's instead of flooding the market with new 3g phones and taking attention away from the phones they are trying to push now.

Working for a wireless carrier as a salesperson, I do find that bringing new things out late in the 4th quarter (especially between Thanksgiving and Christmas) isn't always a wise idea because the stores are busy enough as it is for the season and flooding new information on customers and employees at a busy time is a real pain! Also, bringing it out in Jan-Feb time frame may help bring more (current?) customers in what normally is one of the slowest times of the year.

Don't forget also, that perhaps they are still testing some phones so they have more to offer at launch time?

That would seem to make sense as well as any other reason. I bet you are so very busy this time of year, answering the same questions over and over and over...

I don't see it that way. A lot of people want the latest and greatest, just for the sake of it. Cingular just launched a new Walkman phone and a new Windows Mobile Smartphone. It would be good product line management to give those some time at the top before introducing a whole new group of higher-end phones for the latest-and-greatest crowd.

I just think we're talking about different segments of customer. The phone geeks, like we are admittedly, are more of the "latest & greatest" crowd. For instance, the Nokia N80 would probably be a big seller for our "geeky" group when/if Cingular launches it next year. I think your average buyer is not going to shell out major bucks for a 3G phone when they don't even know what 3G is. Your average buyer is going to purchase RAZRs, W600, Kyocera slider phones, or whatever they can get on sale/with a rebate from the carrier.

That being said, I certainly don't know enough about how cell companies do business to even present an intelligent contrary opinion. I guess it has to do more with marketing plans and the way they present these phones,...
