"need" is such a strong word.

I know it's just a power port, but this squelches innovation when the bottom dollar speaks.

This is the worse case I can think of, a large amount of my monthly sales come from accessories and primarily chargers. If this happens walmart/any hodgie mart will be undercutting us so badly this will severly hurt our business. I can see many stores closing up if this does happen since chargers are a bout 95% profit.

let it come... the usb motorola connector is nice... i am tired of buying garbage chargers from your stores, that are made of such poor quality that they do not last even a week. and on a side note, you business model is shaddy for all this corner stores anyway...

😁 This is a great idea. PC have standard USB and Firewire ports for every device that exists. This would add more accessories in the long run.

I just assume that since I have to wait at 90% of the stores I go into, I probably have to wait at yours to. 😁

Well you assumed wrong, we are all independently owned so please dont clump us all together, I (the owner0 actually work in one of my stores 50 hrs a week and take great pride in proving top notch customer service.

Your an idiot, you have never been to one of my stores obviously. I treat my customers better then any corporate store ever has. As far as "poor quality" goes, all my accessories have a lifetime warrany on them, not just against man. defects angainst ANYTHING.

As far as "you business model is shaddy for all this corner stores anyway" I have no idea what you are trying to say.

Walmart undercuts our accessory prices significantly but we still sell boatloads of accessories. Having a universal connector could only increase sales at many stores since you would be able to support many many more makes of phones without carrying a million different chargers.

You are right that walmart does undercut everybody already, however they only carry a small amount of whats available. If this happens than everytime somebody buys a new phone or upgrades they can keep their existing chargers this will severly hurt our business.

As far as those siemens chargers go I only cary 3-4 in stock at a time, so I do know what you mean. I just see a huge drop in accessory sells, lets say we sell 5 cla's a day I can see it going down to 1-2 because everybodys "old" charger will still fit their new phone.

you guys are idiots. look, you make a universal charger for all the phones, then that gives all the carriers a reason to change the type of port they used becuase this new port is faster, stronger, and more efficiant. so, in essence you're not really losing a whole lot of money becuase not only are you going to be selling a hell of a lot of chargers becuase a hell of a lot of people need it. but as time goes on, there will be...

"everytime somebody buys a new phone or upgrades they can keep their existing chargers this will severly hurt our business."

What about the accessories that come with a lifetime warranty!? If everytime they buy a new phone and something happens to their accessories, oh wait they got a life time warranty! They don't need a new or another charger.... it's the same thing...

This concept is a great idea. It will not hurt business what so ever! Sales people have phones too, and who wants to buy a new accessory for your phone every year or two just cause it doesn't fit the phone. If your business is profiting mostly off accessories, then sell some more phones!

With the new standard companys will get less returns on accesories. You wouldn'...

Not necessarily. I buy Sony Ericsson phones and I've never had to purchase a different set of accessories. Many manufacturers create handsets that are compatible with existing accessories. Unless you change phone manufacturers like you change your underwear, I don't see how this would be a tremendous advantage.

Not necessarily. This may be the case in phone nutty South Korea, but over here nobody's screaming for an exact standard. I agree with Phydeaux...need is a very strong word. Differentiation breeds innovation.

Sure there is a need for a standard. I can't believe how many different connectors I have for my devices. Enough already. I don't want to keep searching through boxes to plug in a device that cost lots of money.
Who here really likes the samsung or lg connectors? What about the motorola prongs? The worst. Finally they came up with mini usb. Nokia pretty much has had the most stable and best connector through the years. Probably one of the reasons they have been popular phones. It's time for consumer electronic companies to agree on a standard for their devices to make it easier for the consumer.

well, i think they should make a standard port 😁 . my experience with all this crap 👿 aftermarket chargers, cables and other is very poor. not that i am rich but i expect some quality level. if you go to the avereage store resaler, they only cary crap that you can find already on ebay, but they charge 10-29.99 bucks that is really 1-5 bucks... also goes for the data cables. i am sorry, but nokia started to put some standard charges on most of their phoens and is great. but not for the pop ports. but i am pro this... i also bet if you think less of a profit to have that bling bling car, shiny rims and latest sean john shirt will realize i am right and in the long run will pay off. most of this shops are run by kids, and no matt...

until we reach the point that we need to expand beyond the limits of what this standardized port can do (not just charge, but data connections, etc.). At that point, do we just change the standard and say "screw you" to all of the other phones we forced to be the same? It will limit the development of newer technologies involving plug and play ports and will cause manufacturers to limit the abilities of future phones to adapt to the limited port.
...

Dec 14, 2005, 10:47 AM
That's only true if there's an actual limitation on the port. It seems far more likely that a standard port would charge the phone and let any data through the port, so you might need different software to use specialized features, but you wouldn't need a different cable.

Ever think of this? If there was one standard, perhaps the cost of car chargers would go down! Also the crap we're selling right now breaks after a while anyway. There's no reason to change that part. 😉

Yes, we do need it here. It is not news in Korea. They have had a common port called the T-24 for power adapters and data cables for quite some time now. The E170 from Samsung I was using had that port and nearly all phones shipped and sold in Korea do not ship with a power adapter now. They ship only with a cradle. You must buy an adapter. The only changes that will happen is that they are going to standardize the voltage requirements for all the phones. So that now you can use a Samsung adapter on a LG, SKT, MOT, and so on. Very good thing for the consumers and developers of accessories items.
