Rumor had it for along time here in the VZW camp that VZW has always been interested in Alltel, but never pursued it because of the hassle of the wireline side. Verizon Communications is already working to shed their wireline business due to loss. Is this the first indication of the VZW/Alltel merger coming as predicted. Take a look at all the recent data roaming agreements. VZW employees already have a comped access plan for coverage on native VZW and Alltel. We are already seeing a network integration on some level. Although the Western Wireless thing throws me for a curve. Is it possible that Alltel wants to become the next CDMA player on the National Level?
Questions, Comments, Concerns . . .

Alltel, after acquiring Western Wireless, would probably not be a good take-over target for VZW. Because both have a LOT of overlap, especially in rural areas, there would be a great number of divestitures involved. Plus, losing another competitor in places that have already lost Western Wireless, Nextel, and AT&T Wireless...there are some of those.
Also, because of Western Wireless's agreements with T-Mobile and Cingular, Verizon Wireless would have to become a GSM player (they wouldn't have to sell GSM directly to consumers, but they would have to keep a GSM network up, especially since Cingular and T-Mobile dedicated spectrum to Western Wireless for some of the build-out). This would make Vodafone happy, so Verizon would never all...

Alltel will be in the top 5 by 2010. They have been aggressively persuing "national" status for a few years now, if you didn't think so, just look at their sponsorship in NASCAR and of the show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition".
They are launching very nice, and extremly competive plans and pricing that beats all of the competition that I've seen, plus they have money to burn. They are a company to watch, that is 100% certain.
...
they are already in the top 5. lol
1. cingular
2. sprint
3. verizon
4. tmobile
5. alltel
...
Ooops....I ment top three.... 🤠😉
...
lol its ok..
top 3 including what? buyouts or organic growth?
...
Does it really matter?
All the large carriers are purchasing, with the exception of T-Mobile. Verizon is buying mom and pop companies left and right. Alltel with WW and MWW. Sprint bought Nextel, is buying Nextel Partners, and buying other Sprint PCS affiliates. Cingular and AT&T Wireless.
...
problem is, i wasnt asking you, i was asking that person what his intentions were. yes, it does matter, becuase i asked him.
...
way too many divestitures it wouldnt be worth it..
alltel and tmobile would be a good pair.
...
This coversation has been had before. It's not going to happen. Alltel buying nTelos, Cricket, or some of the other small regional carriers makes more sense.
TMo will be trying to build up their network for a while longer, and I doubt that they would want to try and migrate all of Alltels customers to GSM(or GSM to CDMA), Cingy just tried to do this in VA(TDMA to GSM), and pissed most of the people off with what seem to me as false statements of better service and keeping existing plans. I don't see TMo doing that, but I don't see them wanting to try either.
...
why not?
we did have this conversation before it makes the most sense.
1. they will grow their spectrum and tower base.
2. they can always do a gsm/cdma phone.
3. grow in subscriber base.
it makes a lot of sense.
you have no idea if it wont happen, becuase it is a good possibility that it might. it makes the most sense..
alltel and verizon will not happen becuase of regulatory problems, but tmobile and alltel dont have any regulatory issues and they will be fine.

A GSM/CDMA phone would never take hold very well unless the CDMA portion would be able to be user swappable via the SIM. Imagine not only having to swap the SIM, but now call the number in. It wouldn't go well with the GSM standard.
...
of course a gsm/cdma phone would work. thats like saying a cdma/iden phone wont work, which will happen.
...
Actually, it won't(just open the phones up, then consider where everything for both iDen and CDMA will go). Actually, I guess you could merge some of the technologies, but they would both suffer greatly initally(go for it Sprintel, I'm all about you suffering! 😈 ). The Nextel half of Sprint is supposed to be 100% CDMA by 2010 anyway, if memory serves. Besides, iDEN is limited, which is why Nextel was already in the begining stages of moving to an all CDMA network.
As far as TMo and Alltel being a good marriage, you need to look at other factors. TMo USA was on the blocks to be sold, but now isn't, so they're not going to be up for sale again anytime soon. You also have to remember that TMo is the worlds largest provider, with...

Also, I don't see VZW and Alltel mergeing either...
...
yea that wont happen..
too many divestitures of assets and it wouldnt be worth it.
...
suffer? how? they can put the equipment onto the towers and in the phones to make a stronger network. its easy. telus is doing it up in canada. (they have iden and cdma)
sprint actually will be migrating some of nextel's spectrum and towers starting in 2007-2008 time frame. iden isnt limited lol. you can do many things with iden. if they werent going to merge with sprint they wouldnt have done cdma. it takes a long time to do and a lot of money.
"TMo USA was on the blocks to be sold, but now isn't, so they're not going to be up for sale again anytime soon."
true, but they can be sold or buy out anytime they want.. just becuase a company says they arent selling doesnt mean anything.. we saw that with sprint and nextel and cingula...

this wont happen.. a verizon alltel merger would make the new company have way too many properties and market share which would make them to all kinds of divestitures of both spectrum, subscribers and other assets. it wouldnt be in their interest to do so.
alltel should partner up or buy or get bought out by tmobile usa.
...
Alltel is far more likely to attempt to make a buyout of #6 U.S. Cellular, which would reinforce their coverage in markets that they don't currently have service (northern Indiana and Illinois, just for starters).
It would definitely solidify their presence in the midwest and definitely close the gap between themselves and T-Mobile.
If they snap up other regionals like Cricket, that move could definitely make them, if not a national player, a real contender to the Big Four.
Now scuze me whilst I go crawl back under my rock.

US Cellular may mean a lot of divestitures as well. Many Western Wireless markets were divested to US Cellular, and they would need to be divested yet again.
...
well, you dont know that. if they arent over the cap, which they wouldnt, and if they dont lead a lot of market share, which they dont there shouldnt be many divestitures. of course, if they control a few markets then it will be divestitures but i doubt it..
