It is going to take another 3-4 years to produce stable wimax gear which is interoperable and actually mobile. My personal guess is that it might take longer. the 802.16e spec was rushed through by intel really and like every other paper standard, i guarantee it will not work without changes. Amendments take more time and mobility is not so easy, especially when your group is driven by firms with little mobile experience like intel.

In the meantime, the world will not stand still. You'll have release 6 or even 7 from UMTS by then which will probably include an OFDMA downlink at least and an all IP architecture. They will learn from wimax implementation errors.

I think WiMax will be rolled out by major internet providers as a way to reach areas that they "can't" get to with existing technology(cable and dsl). That would be the most effective path IMO.

I can see in now.....

"Get the new WiMax version of AOhell v19.2, and have you're crappy internet everywhere!" 😛

I still like the idea of WiMax, but I think that everyone fell into the hype to soon. I think we'll see WiMax being rolled out by the internet providers for local govt. and home based users, rather than wireless phones.
