Anyone can download 1 of the countless ioS or Android apps that offer this same capability for much cheaper price points.

Sure - and most of them require the other person to have that same app. Others do not use your telephone number or require you to open and call in the app over VoIP which sometimes is not as great sounding as a real network (and in many cases can not switch between WiFi and Cellular). On top of this, how many are willing to give a third-party your credit card number when almost all these companies have been hacked? Why not just let T-Mobile bill you $5 or $10 total for the service for you to pay however you want?

Not on all. There are those out there that let you call without the other party having the same app. Just have to do the research.
And they are great sounding as well. I use them all the time. I have used my credit card number and nothing, I mean nothing has happened. These companies are legit and have high-security encryption just like T-Mobile for payments.
I pay a "flat" price and no fees like T-Mobile with their billing.
